You'd have to take the entire notebook apart, void the warranty, etc...just to get to it (EDIT: At least that is how every other notebook I've seen works). And the performance benefits would be marginal and too expensive to be worth it.

If you are lacking in performance, I'd vote for upgrading the RAM and then the hard drive.

What is the cpu you're trying to upgrade from. As night2004 said, upgrading the CPU would only yield minimal benefits.

I never say use the search tool BUT.......this topic has been discussed so often on this website. My SZ260p shipped with a T2400 and I upgraded to the T7600 2.33 and it took about 10 minutes to unscrew the plate on the bottom of the laptop and yes, I am sure. The hard drive is not difficult either but the CPU and RAM are easiest.

    Try looking here.....

    Yours would use Socket M.

Socket P is for Santa Rosa.

MxMoney what was the performance increase like?

I was thinking at one point upgrading my Core Duo T2600 (2.13ghz) to Core Duo 2 T7600 (2.33ghz)

Decided aginst it after looking at benchmarks showing only a 10-15% increase in speed and 0-2% for 3d performance. Add that the cost would be AU$900 for the cpu as well.

I upgraded my sz150P/C to an intel Core 2 duo 2.0gh/z, a seagate 7200.2 160gb hard drive and 2 gb of ram. The biggest performance gain i saw was from the hard drive upgrade. the fujitsu runs at a 1.5G/s rate, where as the new drive runs at double that--3G/s. Faster bootups and faster wakeups, plus a faster rpms for the drive. This machine is so simple to work on and upgrade. and for those with vista problems, i did order the vista companion cd from sony. Totally worth 10 bucks.

On laptoplogic.com, there is a guide to upgrading the hard drive. I got my seagate off of buy.com since it was sold out everywhere else.

You can, but I just did an upgrade install of ultimate using the Vista Upgrade Companion CD, and it went very smoothly. Plus, with ultimate, you can use your fingerprint scanner and tpm with the bitlock feature since the upgraded OS doesn't support the whole "My Safe" thing.

the first couple time I installed Vista, only on the business edition was upgrade an option. But after the hard drive swap, I started from scratch with the recovery discs, then jumped into the vista ultimate upgrade using the companion cd. Short answer is I did the upgrade to ensure greater compatibility since I had such little luck doing the clean install.
