So after dissasembling and ressasembling my sz 110/b and breaking the connector for the camera, i realized that a lot of the parts on my laptop are used in the other later model laptops.

i just want to ask if its possible to buy the motherboard of a later model sz say a 6 or 7 series with a santa rosa chipset or even a penryn chipset and still use the same stuff i have in my laptop (eg screen, usb ports, mousepad) etc. it seems to me that the sz laptop is highly modular and that parts are being used voer and over again. if my logic is correct, there really isnt a need to completely upgrade then right?

bump. i saw a system board on ebay for a much later vaio with the 8400 nvidia chipset.

also under completed listing i saw someone with an LED backlit cover screen. if it does come up, would it just be possible to remove my backlit screen and use the much thinner LED.

(ive already broken down and dismantled my sz numerous times so its not a problem)

I upgraded mine. I went T7600 processor, 7200rpm hard drive, I even did draft N wireless. Check out my signature below. I don't have the slightly faster Santa Rosa bus speed but I have everything that the latest models have and I have had my machine for 2 years. I have had to replace the side cover because I crunched the case too hard. I ordered the part from Sony parts online. They have everything. I bought a wireless antenna from them. I just ordered the antenna from a 700 series and used it in mine. The mobo looks like it would take a lot of work to get out but it is do-able.

definitely you made a great job, you transformed your "old" SZ2" to an actual SZ.

In my sz3 my next project is to upgrade ram from 2 to 4gb although the motherboard of this series does not recognise full 4gb, 3 gb is enough.
also i would like to upgrade hd to a 7200rpm, but i'm afraid if this could cause a lot of warm in the machine and decrease battery life.
and finally in a long term i would like to upgrade wifi antenna, but i dont think if i would be capable of doing this

MxMoney you have the GMA 950/7400 graphics card which is not DX10 compatible so it still differs slightly from the current SZ laptops that are being sold. That is the one thing with these kind of upgrades you cannot usually change the graphics card.

I have been thinking about getting my carbon fibre lid replaced with a premium carbon fibre one. I am sure that it should be possible to do that. I like the carbon fibre lid but you never know i might get the lid swapped out in the future. I haven't seen these lids being sold anywhere.
I would probably get a Sony approved repair centre to carry out the work.

as i said, ive seen an sz6xx mobo floating on ebay. I'm sure that one uses an 8400 nvidia card plus a santa rosa CPU. this is a cheaper alternative than buying another sz. if im lucky perhaps i might see one that uses the newest penryn

Not sure how much that really matters. I don't game on my notebook computer but thanks for pointing that out. 7400 runs aero very nicely. In fact, the Integrated graphics run aero nicely. My main interest in the upgrades was for hobby and for processing power. I use my laptop for work and Pro Tools.
