Check out the VAIO TZ, which is the predecessor to the TT... same screen, 2GB RAM max (vs 4), 2MB L2 (vs 3), and 533MHz FSB (Vs 800). If you can deal with that minor performance drop (with the TZ) you can get an AWESOME deal on them, brand new. I also think they look better.

You can compare those Vaio TT models on www.sonystyle.co.uk look under TT ready made models and click compare.

Notibaly for me the VN/X has the SU9400 (1.40 GHz) compared to the SU9300 (1.20 GHz) on the WN/B and LN/B, the other difference is RAM and HDD capacity. No SSD in the ready made models in Europe. You can confugure your own: https://www.sonystyle.eu/SonyStyle/mimes/openAccess/hub/hubpage_ctohub.jsp its not cheap though...

A great choice as an ultra portable laptop, looks great but...not a big performer especially without the presence of an SSD drive. The TZ is still a stunner and indeed you can grab a bargain on one these...

I would personally consider the VAIO Z series instead :)

You should have a look at the Vaio TT thread on this forum.

And with no disrespect to SSDVaio, I would personally go for the TT over the Z (and I did!). 0.5lb lighter and probably about 33% more battery life. (some would say, "but the Z has a much better CPU and graphics for only 0.5lb more weight and with only 33% less battery life!"). Obviously it depends on your specific needs.

Also, TT runs cool and quiet which is a must for me. TZ run hottest, too hot to use it on my lap. I returned it and went for TT. Z is a compromise on size, quietness, heat, but faster cpu.

The Z also offers more screen real estate (1600x900) vs the 1366x768 on the TZ/TT.. this can be an issue if you are multitasking. If you are mainly using MS Office, then the specs on the TZ/TT are perfectly adequate.

Also, make sure you get the SSD equipped one; Vista is is bottlenecked with the small 4200RPM 1.8 inch HDDs.

For myself, i only notice the TZ getting hot when i watch videos or encoding stuff. Otherwise its very cool; esp. the palm-rest, touchpad and KB area which are basically room temp... i really notice this when using other laptops where they get warm in these spots.

The TT has also got a better GPU than the TZ. The GMA 950 that is in the TZ has been out for a number of years now.
The TT has also got a HDMI port.
The TZ does have slightly better battery life than the TT though.

It depends on your needs but if i was buying now i probably would think that the TZ probably would not cut it as my main computer but that the TT probably could.

The ram difference will make a difference in Vista. It might not make much of a difference in Windows 7 though.

The HD in the TT is also SATA and is faster than the standard drive in the TZ.

Look wise i prefer the TT over the TZ.
The TZ also has had known problems with overheating. You can find information on this on the Sony US website.

I'm not sure if this is still the case but the X models usually in the EU indicate that is the top end model. The lid normally is premium/ultimate carbon fibre as opposed to black/intense noir carbon fibre.

    It's a 5400 rpm drive.. but yeah, it's still a bit of a bottleneck.
