I recently did a complete system restore on my vaio notebook and now I can't get my speed/stamina switch to work. I've tried reinstalling every application and driver on my restore disc. I've been on the sony website and downloaded and installed everything they have for my notebook but no luck. no matter what position the switch is in it always starts in stamina mode. Is there some kind of driver or application that i may be missing? This isn't the first time i've reformatted but it's the first time this has ever happened. I highly doubt that its a physical problem like with the switch itself but if that is the case, is there anyway i can make my notebook boot in speed mode (nvidia graphics) without the switch? like editing a boot file or something.

is it possible that my nvidia graphic controller just burned out or stopped working? If so how would i know? how do i check?

Did you install the Vaio event service? (you should be able to download it from the driver site)

yes, several times. I've also reinstalled power management and drivers for both graphics several times. From my vaio recovery disc and from the website.

Update: Got it working. I had to uninstall the Intel Graphics Driver in device manager. By doing that, it recognized that the Nvidia driver was missing (my guess), it then reinstalled the Nvidia driver after the Intel. After a reboot, i had to reinstall the event manager again since the switch didnt work. Bottom line, reinstall the event driver and uninstall both graphics drivers, reboot, reinstall graphics, reboot, reinstall event driver.

    ------------
Were you able to fix the problem? I just wanted to post that I had the same problem with my Z, I reinstalled the event service and it worked. Does the SZ have a LED to indicate which mode you're in? The Z does, and the led did not light up in either mode, and the switch didnt do anything. My Nvidia card did not show up under device manager so I thought the card might be bad, but the event manager fixed it.

    Now you got me curious.

Is that the only purpose of the Sony Event Service, to constantly watch that switch, and to go into action if you flip it, switching between the two sets of graphics drivers?

Or does it (the service) do other things as well?

And, when it does sense that one has flipped that switch, exactly what does it do to make the change? Does it execute a .reg file to make registry changes regarding the graphics driver? Does it uninstall one set of drivers, and install the other? Or enable one, and disable the other?

If there is something like a reg file(s) that the Sony Event Service invokes when it senses the switch change, that makes the change between the two graphic modes, perhaps the change could be easily made without the hardware switch as well. For instance, to create a shortcut on the desktop, that invokes the reg file(s).
