Hi, I was shutting down my sony vaio laptop. There was a program
not responding so I ended the task. Then it froze.
I pressed one of those two 'hotkeys'? at the top and got this

sbmsg.exe unable to initilize installation ....about some dll

I went to check the message so that I'd type it out correctly
but now my screen is black and frozen

    Oh my, any suggestions

    thanks

So it's basically frozen at the part before it shuts down? In these cases, I just shut it down manually by pressing the power button for a couple seconds. Maybe try CTRL + Delete, and see if you can end any programs that are not responding.

geez, I can't believe it! I'm pretty computer savvy and tried the
control alt delete and everything else.

Pressing the power button for a few seconds did the trick

    I feel like a fr....in idiot. Everything's fine now
I'm gonna have a stiff drink and contemplate my life

Thanks a bunch for your help!

No problem, just don't do it often. From my experience you will eventually get a blue screen with a "Unmountable Boot Volume" error. My computer was always freezing, because I was using 256MB of RAM, and trying to run multiple memory hungry programs. If that's the case for you too, I suggest upgrading your RAM or purchasing a new computer. I went from desktop with 256MB of RAM to a laptop with 3GB, and I love it :)
