i have sony vaio fs670. it has 15.4" WXGA wide screen (1280x800). when i played widescreen dvd in the laptop, it cuts the upper and lower part just like when i watch in my non-wide screen tv. i expect the movie will play at full 1280x800 wide screen. is this normal?

You probably don't have a widescreen tv at home. Anyways, many widescreen dvds are wider than the ratio of widescreen laptops and widescreen TVs, hence you still see black bars on the top and bottom of your laptop screen with these dvds. Try a couple more different widescreen dvds and you'll see.

All widescreen notebooks are a different ratio than widescreen movies, so you will always have bars on top at least. If it's not formatted for wide, you may have bars on teh left and right too.

This isn't "sony notebook's fault" or anything. This is basically the DVD's fault. I went nuts after i bought a $4,000 Sony widescreen tv and still saw black bars on some DVDs, but later on did a little research and realized it's basically how the DVD is formatted.

Yes, it's normal. Notebook widescreen ratio is 16:10. And there are multiple ratios for widescreen movies: 1.66:1, 1.78:1, 2.35:1, etc. So you will still see some black bars, but they are still more enjoyable than watching widescreen movies on a non-widescreen notebook. Btw, this applies to widescreen TVs too.

Additionally, some older DVDs are not Anamorphic (the picture is compressed with the black bars included in each frame). Most new DVDs don't have this problem and will automatically choose the best possible framing to view the movie.

When high definition movies come out, you should be able to view them with only bars on the top and bottom because 720 p supports 1280 horizontal pixels.
