Read this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=321709&highlight=1366x768+vs+1600x900
For some comparison: look at these pictures: http://kunkoku.livedoor.biz/archives/51484778.html -
any comparisons in english
-
Sorry no =[. But either way, if you compare the 2 pictures, you can see how much workspace and have a general idea of how smaller the font/icons will between 1366x768 vs 1600x900. I am actually debating about the resolution too. I am going to stop by to check out the res whenever I have the time before the purchase. If this is an issue to you, you should do the same.
-
I really dislike how they have all the browsers in windowed mode, as I find that misleading.
-
me too anyone own one or both can give info

I am receiving my 690 with 1600x900 resolution tomorrow. I am not positive I'll enjoy that resolution like you so I'll tell you how it goes. I've seen the 610 with the larger resolution so I can make some comparisons once I get it.

This has been discussed endlessly... and there's no right answer, because it's a matter of opinion.
I have a TT, which has the same resolution as the 1600x900 Vaio Z, and my prior laptop was an S, which has comparable resolution to the 1366x768 Vaio Z.
My personal opinion is that the larger resolution is slightly more comfortable, but that the smaller resolution is perfectly fine (unless you have vision problems, are farsighted etc). It just takes a day or two to get used to, and then it looks normal. I just hold the laptop closer to my face and/or increase the zoom in IE or Word or Excel a notch, on the very occasional times that I feeld the need to do so, and everything's fine.
I think most people would be better off with the 1600x900, unless it's going to be used primarily as a casual web-surfing machine (& thus you don't necessarily need tons of resolution), and/or unless you know for a fact that you have problems with small text (when reading newspapers etc). But again, that's just my opinion. -
can i get the 1600x900 and then decrease the resolution in windows

so if bought the 1600x900 and changed the resolution to 1366x768 it would not look good

What you can do with the 1600x900 if it isn't the most comfortable is change the DPI, around pg 636 on the Z owners thread arth1 starts talking about why changing it to 140 can be beneficial and the tweaks following to keep things looking right. Worth checking out? If I get the 690 I'm going to mess with that idea just to see.
Also, remember that some programs can be adjusted to be larger. If you use Firefox you can easily adjust the zoom of entire pages or just text (it does a great job), and an add-on like No Squint can hold your zoom preference which is really handy. You can also have Windows display things with large titles (for windows), larger icons, etc - small fixes, but if those are the minor irritants it would be worth messing with. -
Also, if you have a 1600 x 900 resolution Z, you can't run it at 1366 x 768. It can only down-set to 1268 x 768 and as stated before, would not look good.

ok then how do i decide between the two without being able to see them

Why don't you go to a computer shop and try to see 2 laptop with the correct resolutions and screen sizes and then compare?
-
i cannot currently get out of the house for a while but need to purchase now
-
even if i did got to a computer shop there is none nearby that sell this range and what other laptop have the resolution that i can see in store to understand if the size is right.
-
i have had a look at the first reply to this thread but i cannot tell very well from the picture comparisons maybe if someone had better images or different images it may help.
-
One last option you have is to find the thread that shows you how to estimate DPI using your own screen/computer. I didn't personally find this all that helpful, but who knows. -
Here is the thread I think you want and good luck.

is it too small
-
a matter of fact i do use contact lenses(have a very bad eye sight) but
I had no problem whatsoever in reading.I am buying a Z690 CTO next couple of weeks. -
My 690 came in today and the 1600x900 resolution is really nice. Everything is crisp and excellent. The text isn't too small either.
-
well i do wear glasses so not sure
-
is it worth the extra £150 over the 1366 x 768 model?
-
-
Not to be rude, but you just have to make the decision for yourself. Wherever you buy it from, pay attention to the return policy just in case. (Sonystyle.com purchased can be returned w/in 30 days but you pay shipping - if you engrave it, however, no returns.)
Edited to add: If all you see different in the two models is resolution, the extra cost paired with the uncertainty of if you'll be comfortable with the resolution probably isn't worth it. -
so you think i should go for the 1366x768
-
Can someone lock this thread?
-
why do you wanna lock the thread
-
because the question has already been answered many times over
if you are very picky about picture quality, the best option is to use the 1600x900 and then raise the DPI in windows, which makes everything bigger. this option keeps the high resolution (crisp images) while keeping it at a comfortable size
however, there is a price difference.. so if you cannot justify the price with the "difference" in image quality, then stay with the 1366, which is also awesome -
Really, just go check it out yourself.
-
theres a reason its more expensive.
-
and whats that reason
-
the 1366 is excellent
but the picture quality is better on 1600, just like how higher resolutions offer better picture quality on any external monitor
there is no difference in readability because the DPI can be scaled on the 1600 through windows
you have to decide for yourself if the higher resolution is worth it -
I´m very happy with the 1600 resolution - excellent quality and perfect for daily use
-
just so i know how good is your eyesight thanks

For resoluttion considerations in the Z model, you might try this trhead which is very helpful.
