well ive had the laptop for awhile now and its starting to slow down a bit and i recently downloaded a video program and after i didnt that alot of pop ups keep apearing so i think its time just to swipe and start over. Windows 7 was the operating system it came with. the laptop didnt come with a genuine version of windows 7 so i wanted to make sure that would have an operating system if i did swipe. but your right it does have alot of that manufacturers crap on it and would like to get it all off as well.

The free version's all you need. Then hopefully that'll catch any viruses, etc. Then run a a disk defragment (type "Disk Defragmenter" in start menu search bar, at least in windows 7, vista should be the same). Try those two, then decide whether or not you want to reformat/reinstall your OS -
Did you make a set of restore (recovery) DVD's or did you just make a recovery cd by going to Backup & Restore Centre > Make recovery cd?
This is an important distinction!
One will recover your system to its "out of the box" state (recovery DVD's) and the other allows certain repair functions, but does not re-install the OS. -
Some other things that can slow down your computer:
- If a magnetic HDD (vs. a Solid State Drive), fragmentation. I suggest using the free Auslogics Disk Defrag program, with the Defrag and Optimize feature if you haven't run that type of utility before. DO NOT DEFRAG IF YOU HAVE AN SSD
- Registry Errors. Run one of the many registry repair programs such as ones that Symantec/Nortion 360 come with or Tune Up Utilities, etc.
- Too much junk in your sytem temporary file folders. Again, use a untility like TuneUp Utilities or Clean Sweep to delete: Internet cache and temporary files
- Too many programs installed (least likely to be a factor). Uninstall any program you never use. Make sure to re-run a registry cleaner after the uninstallationsare all done.
