I've had my sz270 since july but I've only been using it unplugged for about 2 months and now it seems I can only get a max charge out of it of about 20 minutes. I charge it up overnight and during the day when I use it its like completely drained in no time. I know these batteries die over time but I thought I'd get a little more out of it than just 2 months. Anyone else have any similar problems with the battery? I wonder if the extended warranty will cover it.

    That seems awful short.
I would call Sony, especially with the recall rigt now.

I am getting a little over 6 hours with wifi off and screen set to 2 and in stamina mode.
Wifi on, I get about 5:45-6 hrs.

UPDATE: now the battery holds no charge whatsoever and windows won't even recognize a battery being there. It just says running on AC power. If I unplug the power it shuts off immediately.

Well, your battery is broken and unless you deliberately try to damage it (which you didn't), this isn't supposed to happen within a couple of months, no matter what.
I don't know what warranty you got or where you bought it, the US standard warranty excludes batteries, for example, in Germany, they're covered by a seperate 6 month warranty (which I used to have my battery replaced).
Still, whatever warranty applies to you: Send in the battery (or go to the story where you bought it) and tell them to replace it. At least in my case, they didn't ask any questions and given the chances right now, they might exchange it even if it's not covered by your warranty. Plus they can't say more than "no".

After 3 months of use, my SZ battery life had fallen to about an hour.

I called Sony and they sent me a new one, no questions asked. They did not want the old one back.

The new one has performed well for almost 6 months now.

a few people asked for clarification on my battery replacement:

    - this is in the USA
    - my SZ was under warranty
    - I called Sony support

They shipped me a new battery quickly for free.

I have this same problem with the battery no longer being detected. I called Sony, and they keep asking me to send in my unit for them to check it out. I am confident its just the battery issue, and I can't really afford to send in my computer for 2 weeks and have nothing. I am a student and have work to do especially in the last several weeks.

How did you get them to send you a new battery no questions asked?

    thanks

    BTW, I have a SZ120P

I really don't wanna be without my laptop for any amount of time so hopefully they will just give me a new one. I'm in Alaska and sometimes I leave my laptop in the car where its been getting down close to zero degrees at night so I was thinking maybe that had something to do with it. Other than that I'm at a loss. From the posts above I'm guessing its probably just a bad battery.

I didn't do anything special - I just told them my machine was only 3 months old and the battery should not be this bad so quickly. They said they would send a new battery, and they did. They did not ask for the old battery back. They did not ask me to send in my entire laptop.

This was in June 2006, in the USA - I called Sony at (888) 476-6972.

    My model is SZ110.

I've called twice now, and they keep trying to get to me to do all this diagnostic stuff, and I said its not that, its the battery, and they keep trying to get me to send mine in. I'm going to try it again. Do you have any reccomendations on who to contact if this doesn't work?
