I have a Mat****a UJ-852 DVD drive form my SZ450. Just recently, i can't get the drive to register in vista. It still let's me load and boot from startup but will not show in my computer. It shows in device manager but shows error with

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

I know it's not the dvd, I swapped it out with a friend's dvd and it gives me the same problem.

    any thoughts?

Same thing happened to me when I was trying to deinstall all the bloatware that came installed. It seems that drivers for DVD are connected to some of the bloatware (Roxio perhaps ?) and when that goes drivers also gets corrupted or something. I haven't found solution for that. I rather went doing "half-clean" install which I described here ===> http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=109719

I did a clean install of Vista and it worked fine...I didn't have to install any drivers or anything.

Try going into device manager, selecting the drive and doing Uninstall.

Once it's uninstalled it should dissapear from device manager.

Now do a "Scan for hardware changes"

See if that helps...that should reinstall the drivers.

That didn't help in my case. I tried everything I could think of. All the time it keeps saying "drivers are corrupted".

    Found a FIX! :)

apparently, when i uninstalled Roxio 9, it corrupted a file in the registry.

Here's the fix from Microsoft. I got code 39 and this is for code 31. But it worked perfectly.

And please check, if the Sony® VAIO® Power Management Utility didn't disable the CD/DVD-RW, especially while running on battery.
    This is possible, too.
You can also disable the LAN, Modem/Sound, iLink/ Firewire and the, like mentioned above the disc-drive.
