i have a 691nx, and the screen brightness (fn f5 and f6) works just fine after a reboot, but after a few hours of use, standbys, hibernations (normal use for me), the brightness stops working. The display level will show, but the keys wont register any changes in the display level and in actual brightness. All other FN keys work as they should.

Any idears aside from rebooting all the time?

Try the Windows Mobility Center's (All Programs>Accessories>Windows Mobility Center) brightness slider. Additionally, you could add the WMC to your quickstart toolbar for easy access.
