i just bought this laptop today to replace my lovely thinkpad T41 that had the infamous screen meltdown, and now it the screen on the new one is doing some weird flickering. it is intermittently flickering black with white stripes when it starts or leaves the vista screen. it doesn't make these flickers other times and everything else seems to be working ok.
am i being paranoid or should i exchange it?

Try using the newest drivers, if that doesn't solve the problem, then exchange it.

Try turning off User Account Control. If the problem persists, it is definately driver issue, wait for Sony to put out an updated driver.

i had tried that, but it didn't work either. i even did the online tech support from sony, which wasn't helpful. but, i have finally fixed it. here's how i did it, for anyone having the annoying screen flickering:
rolled back the previous driver to the 11/06 version
downloaded the 158.24 version from the nvidia website
in device manager, i clicked to update drivers, then went through the process manually, choosing "let me pick from a list" then "have disk", then
because there is no 7400 listed under "choose a model", i chose 7600
installed, then restarted
the problem is gone, even when i do a video test on the hardware diagnostic center. i'm not sure if it matters whether i rolled the driver back.
i've wasted 3 days of serious study time for a huge test in 3 weeks and almost risked standing in fry's customer service line, but it's worth it.
