so after a bit of research i might be a little more interested in the SZ since it is only 1.3lbs heavier which is barely noticeble and has a lot more power. i know the main difference is the battery life, which is okay by me because im always near an outlet.
what im asking is, is the sz and tz targeting the same ultra mobile market??
im torn between the two, i love light weight and the tz might have a little too less power for me but im torn.
i hate the sz keyboard vs the nice tz one. i like more HD space and faster processor which the tz does not have.
mainly gonna be used for school, work, web, little multimedia like music videos etc etc
which one should i get guys!?!?! help!

Hi kofighter
I was asking me the same question 1 + 1/2 years ago. I decided for the sz, because it just has more power. In the end I am getting a Vaio tz92 from japan in a few weeks because I always used my sz at the university where there aren't as many power outlets as I thought there would be. So I was constantly running out of juice lately. If you do light office work, web surfing and a little multimedia than the sz might be an overkill and you could easily go with the tz, the core 2 duo ulv has enough raw performance, but if you're a heavy duty video editor I would strongly recommend the sz. I think the main question you should be asking yourself is: do I need a lot of battery life? No --> I would go with the sz. IF yes then get the tz.

What would worry me about the TZ is the very small display. I know my eyes couldn't handle the microscopic text for sustained use.

thanks for your replies.
i have a very old desktop at home 1.6ghz 256ram, yes i know very old, and i have adapted to that speeds which is fine with me at certain times. so i guess the sz might be a little over kill for me. outlets arent a problem here at my university, every desk as an outlet to it.
what is the battery life on the sz anyways?
i didnt think about how long id be on the tz with its small screen. something new to ponder about. basically id use this laptop a lot. during school after school as well as at night time. i dont do much on a computer like editing videos or running major processing hungry programs. basically i just web surf, email, ms office and light download.
i guess i answered my own question haha with the desktop perf i have, i guess a tz will do. -

Or does your old desktop have an old operating system and old programs? A lot of the extra hardware power gets swallowed by the newer software leaving users with limited benefit.

I think he runs Windows XP so... He could just do the same on his new TZ or maybe try a Vista clean install...
-
Yea that's correct I'm running. Xp pro sp1 on 256ram hah I do have 1gb ram sitting that I haven't installed yet but I don't mind how fast its running now. But that doesn't mean I want my laptop to be the same speed I'd like it to be a little faster since its for mobility. At home I just boot up and walk away here I'd boot up and be sitting there so the times would seem like its taking a lot longer.
Also for the tz, all else equal is there a big difference or noticable speed difference for 1.06 vs 1.33? -
yea, but not much...
Oh and you TZ will be lot faster don't worry
Even with Vista in it it will be faster than your actual desktop...
But be sure to do a semi or a full clean install, it's VERY important or you'll have a very slow machine... -
The reason I ask about the speed difference is I was wondering if the speed difference is gonna justify the price difference. I'd like 120gb vs 100gb and 20 is a lot if I'm using it all for files docs and music but I've come to a conclusion to just bring an external hdd. But I'm glad to know the tz will be faster than my desktop as is hahaha. Hanks for all your guidence!
Any other info or suggestions/advice would be great. -
I think the subject of your thread makes a good point. I know I seriously considered an SZ before opting for my TZ. I was really impressed by the portability and amazing battery life. I easily get 7 hours on the standard battery and, as for portability, you said 1-2 pounds is not a big difference but try lifting both models and you'll see the TZ is feather-light by comparison.
The most important tip is what has already been stated--do a clean install without all Sony's bloatware! Then, your TZ (assuming you opt for that model) will be very fast. Also make sure you get a model with 2GB RAM if you intend to keep Vista and not downgrade to XP.
Finally, I'm sure you know this, but the SSD option really makes a difference, if you are willing/able to sacrifice space. You'll have much less storage space than with the conventional HD options but the speed of the SSD helps to make up for the ULV processors. You can add removable media to make up for the lack of space (I have a 16GB SDHC card installed in mine, which works great).
Good luck!

I would get the TZ and try saving up for parts for a powerful desktop computer. Best of both worlds: mobility and power. The SZ is a jack of all trades computer. Of course, that's not a BAD thing, depending on your preferences, but I'd rather just get the best of what I can instead of opt for something in the middle. Trust me, a lot of us have decided between the SZ and the TZ, including myself. I returned my SZ after a week of being unhapy with its size and the nVIDIA GPU, and got the TZ and it was one of the best decisions I made. It's funny because I never thought I really wanted an ultraportable (this being my first ever laptop); it was only until I actually *had* the SZ in my own hands when I realized this. Only you can decide for yourself. Just don't let those negative reviews found on other sites about the TZ being slow fool you. Those are from people who didn't do a clean install of the OS and are probably still using the Spiderman 3 desktop wallpaper with the AOL and Norton junk still installed on their systems. My 4200 RPM HDD TZ boots to Vista's desktop in 35-40 seconds, and I have rarely ever had a system hangup, and never experienced a "BSoD."
target market for sz/tz the same?
