so, the tech is supposed to be coming out tomorrow afternoon to fix my TZ. i've read a couple threads on here from people who had a bad experience with the repair.
anyone actually have a good experience with the repair tech (or at least one without issues)?
like the rest of you TZ owners, i baby my laptop and it's in pristine condition...not a scratch or scuff to be found! just wondering if i would be any better off sending it in to a service center instead of letting an onsite tech do the repair.
-
It mght be good if you check what he is doing, so dont leave him alone! Maybe he will do a better job this way and if you notice anything wrong, tell him to repair that right away!
-
Had mine today, and only problem is the power button's hinge cap is loose and wobbles when the lid is closed.
From what I've read here, my experience seems to be the most minor for an on-site call. I'll let you know if it bursts into flames later in the day! =)
Good luck to you.. seriously! -
Take pictures that are dated. That way if something gets screwed up, you can prove that it wasn't the tech. Better to be safe than sorry.
-
Yeah, I took around a dozen pictures from several sides and angles before he got there, and then sat there with him while he worked. Didn't want to make him nervous by watching him too closely, so I just read through the TZ disassembly guide they sent him and BS'd a little.

IMO an onsite tech is a much better option then what was offered to me. I had to get mine picked up by someone from DHL not knowing where its going to go next or when I'm getting it back (though they said the average time was 3 days).
I just got mine TZ back today though after 5 days. But I noticed the screen bezel is a little bit loose. Sony personally called me and asked me if everything is fine. I told them about the frame of the screen. So they are going to pick it up again and fix it. So far I got an 2gb USB stick and cleaning clothe at the expense of losing my TZ for 5 days + 3 or more days.
Why worry about an onsite tech if the other option is much worse. -
Honestly, I think I would have preferred shipping mine to a Sony service center instead. The on-site guys around here mostly work on Dells and repair satellite equipment, plus I didn't get any free goodies like a USB drive or cleaning cloth.
It was funny actually, the tech had never even heard of an SSD solid state drive before! =) -
thanks for the replies. the tech actually called and said he could come out later today instead. this actually works out because now i can be home instead of just my wife to watch over the guy. now i just have to get home and take some pics before he gets there.
if i hear any loud cracks while he's working, i'm goin after this guy with a paintball gun! -
After looking at your sig, I'd be willing to bet that your CTO's wires are already routed properly and the tech will just add the grounding strap. I guess the lady I spoke to at Sony might've been right, when she said that TZ's purchased factory-direct were not affected. The on-site tech said that those models were added to the recall as a precaution.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes! -
Just thinking, if you want to be really cheeky, ask the tech if its OK to video the procedure and video the actual work
However if the tech says no - either doesn't want it, or is going to be too nervous, you can't do it. -
i actually thought of that. but no video cam here. and the video from the digital camera sucks as well.
ah well...i'll just have to hover around him while he makes the repair, paintball gun locked and loaded.
-
Threatening physical violence may scare the tech off.
(Or make him take legal action, who knows)
Even if its just located prominently inside a glass cabinet.
Cosider that too. -
well...the tech came and went. he was here about an hour. i did a quick exam and everything seems to be in order. i'll be doing a more thorough look over once it's daylight out. but, all in all, everything seems to have gone well.
-
Nice, glad to hear! Main things to check for are gouges on the 3 plastic screw covers at the lower part of the front of the case (by the headphone jack, wi-fi switch) and test out the USB ports (USB card was removed for the grounding strap installation in mine).
Probably a good idea to check out everything (optical drive, camera, etc) when you get a chance. The tech I had said it was easy to forget to plug something back in.. and said if he forgot, not to call him - call Sony. -
Sounds good that your did a (semingly) good job.
-
Glad to hear that everything went smoothly.
-
well..maybe i spoke too soon. i'm noticing some flex in the casing around the keyboard (black shiny area). specifically, in the area right above the function keys (not the keys themselves, the shiny black area above them).
however, this could have been there before and i just never noticed. can anyone else confirm that if you push down (lets say above th F8 key), that there is some flex?
and i'll definitely check out the usb and everything else tomorrow. i already checked the camera and that seems to be good. also, no gouges i can find anywhere so far. still want to check it in daylight though. -
Yes, I have quite a bit of flex above most of the function keys, more so above the F5 to F10 area (maybe 1 or 2mm of travel). Think it's normal, though. I don't remember all the areas that flexed prior to my disassembly, but I do recall that several areas that did. Probably just due to the thin plastics and carbon fiber materials used.
tech coming out tomorrow to fix TZ
