    1. NR series (despite the low performance :( )
    2. FZ series (Mosaic design)
    3. TZ series (despite it being hard to type on  )

TZ for sure! It's the most deviant from the looks of any other regular notebook out there.

Number one has to be the X505. I also really like the TX, TZ and UX.

X505 especially stands out since Sony was years ahead of the Macbook Air (2003 vs 2008) and it still had more ports than the MBA! It was also the first to used the gapped keyboards some Apple fanboys think Apple created when the Macbook came out. :D

Definitely true. I'm tired of Apple fanboys always saying that Apple was first to create "the world's thinnest notebook" and gapped keyboards. Apple fanboys always think that their notebooks are the best. I don't think so. :nah:

By the way, I think that Sony should start placing the power button of their notebooks on the side of the hinges. It looks cool.
Also, for its time, the X505 was a revolutionary product.

The X505 looks awesome. I can imagine that it was lightyears ahead of everything when it was released. But the TZ series just steals it for me. The green power button just makes an already great looking laptop so much better. I love the multiple colours you can get for it too. Unfortunately I got the champagne colour. I would have wanted the black, carbon black or deep red one.

The powerbutton really makes al the difference. And the vaio logo on top of the lid really looks neat. Sony has the best notebook designs. I cant believe all the hype Macbooks are getting because of the designs.

I can't believe it either and I hope that Sony announces something that will leave Apple fanboys jealous and their Macbooks in the dust. ;)
I like the powerbutton on the TZ series too. Let's hope Sony will implement this sort of design in their future notebooks. :D

    Worst-designed: AR.

I agree, the AR is not ugly, but it is bland and could have looked much much better. Really seems like a big black slab to me.

IMO, the TZ looks awesomeeee. TX too :) but the TZ still trumps.

IMO sony always owns with battery life, screens, and style =)
they'll still be crippled with price compared to others however, but that'll never stop me from buying a vaio (provided its good at least XD)

I had X505P Japanese Model for over a year. My opinion it is the best design I have never seen so far even it can blow Macbook Air away. I was very impressed when I first saw X505 on a video clips of its first released.

Overall design or just visual design?

Most people are commenting on visual design and some people are talking about overall design.

I couldn't vote for x505 in terms of overall design given it's lack of trackpad (unless I'm missing something) and I read it had very poor battery life.

My vote is for TZ, in all criteria :)

Of the current lineup, I like the Vaio TZ. From my past experience, I really like the design of the original S series. It helped to start the 13.3" notebook market.

On a side note, people are lucky that there are Sony fanboys around to point out who created the floating keyboard design.

I usually only use things like that in my trainings to point out innovation in the VAIO line that ends up becoming prevalent in the market later.

To me, old A series (15.4", not AR) was one of the best designs, at least those days. A115/215/315 was replaced with FS series. Here are the pics

My favorite is Sony Picturebook C1, the "netbook" that was introduced 9 years ago. 9 years later, its design still looks better than any of the cheap netbooks out there.

i second the motion! SZ gets a 3 thumbs up!!

    3 thumbs to battery!
    3 thumbs to Screen!
3 thumbs to small form factory!
    3 thumbs to weight!
    3 thumbs to style!

My only problems is that hte unit comes with only 2 USBs, no HDMI, no TV / Svideo out and my adaptor is running very very hot all the time!

    Hello guys and ladies (??),

I recently got an SZ7 series and I wouldn't swap it for a newer series even if I would be paid to do so.

Being conservative I really like the standard design coupled with etreme power and mobility for such a small lightweight system.

And regarding my tastes... I don't like the new hinge one bit, I rather take the conventional approach.

So I'll call the Vaio SZ the best designed one, but this also depends on what you really want to use your laptop for.

    I wanted power and portability.

In fact, I would most likely have liked the G Series if it were more powerful, but it isn't.
But I also followed the development of the SZ series closely, so there are some sentiments attached as well :D

    All the best.

Sony S series, definitely, one of my absolute favorite laptops of all time. I really like the T series as well, from the same time. X505 was revolutionary, and an engineering masterpiece the whole way. The old Z1 features a sleek, timeless design. In fact, the Dell M1330 is in someways a rip of the Z1, and its Dell's most newsworthy notebook.

    Those are my 4 favorites.

i would have to say the SZ series in terms of balancing performance and size/style (hybrid graphics system ftw)

i would say the TZ had it not had a colour bezel and and black keyboard and palm rest

The best design Sony Laptops for me are The Z1, X505, and SZ CARBON only. The TZ would make the cut, just didn't like that glossy piano finish around the keys - it made it look CHEAP!

If I were a designer for Sony, I would DEFINITELY refresh the X505 or even create a totally different line, HIGH-END along with the TZ and SZ and call it the Vaio X1, equipped with read/write Blu-Ray drive, mouse pad (rather than that red rubber ball), all the ports, the best processor on the market, ethernet, wi-fi, memory stick duo slot, and I would change the CD/DVD load to slot loading, and yet maintain its overall style and thinness as possible. I'm sure most of this is being done as we speak with the introduction of the New SONY VAIO Z, this month (July) or August.

I would probably inquire with Bang and Oluffsen to help and get ideas on a design. Have you been to there stores and take a look at their stuff? Design is AMAZING, WOW!

WOW! Thanks Miki69, I actually have the A250. I never really thought of it having a great design. I must have since I bought it. The only thing that really caught my attention, in respect to design, is the way it angled (curvature) on the sides of the case. Your photos tells it all. Thanks.

Never had a problem with it, but I don't like its weight.

The question is though, do you want a designer notebook??

(E.g the Asus ones with a for example leather display cover)

What I want from a laptop is power (in reasonable means, as far as its possible), battery life, little weight and an efficient desingn.

People have complained about the nois keybord on the SZ, I actually like it, oddly enough...

I like the SZ because it looks so normal, there is nothing fancy in the computer opun a first glance, only when you go into the detail.

For example, I hate (and this is maybe a bit strong but I can't think of a better word...) the new hinge on the Sony Vaios as I can't see what is wrong with the hinge on, for example, my SZ.

But then again, I'm very conservative being only 18 :D

I think this debate over design can go on for ever, some like designer stuff, others hate it.

(I'm anti-designer stuff by the way)

So we can go on for ever, yet will never reach a conclusion...

    All the best

That concept laptop is kinda neat.... but yeah, who knows when it would actually be made.... cool screen though. o_O

Actually, I kinda like the silver hinge on the new models, but I suppose it's only when you don't have an all-silver colored laptop... It adds more variety and doesn't make it look all just one color or the whole laptop drowned out from the inside.
