    Hi folks,

I did clean XP pro install on my TX651P notebook. I did this many time previously and drivers that I got from sony website never pose any problems. But few month ago, I had to send my TX to sony service due to hardware issue. Sony replaced AC module and motherboard. This clean install was the first clean install since I got my PC back from the service. When I was trying to install any driver .exe files, the system gives me "this update is not intended for use with your computer model" message after the initial system check (I would like to know what it's checking for??)

Does anyone have any idea how I can pass this check or how I can install drivers? I really do not understand what's happening here.

    Thank you.

The motherboard replacement is the problem. It's mostly likely a generic or differ brand that the Reinstall disc will not accept.

Try to Explore the CD and run a differ setup file than the main one.

Well whats happening most likely is when they changed out your motherboard they changed out the BIOS chip which not only stores information that tells your computer how to run, but also information about what your computer is.

Basically they must have changed the motherboard from your notebook to a slightly different model number perhaps for a different model notebook but still worked. Anyways basically the drivers won't install on a different model ofcourse. I had this happen when I ordered recovery DVDS from HP they wouldn't work because they weren't for my specific model.

Either that or you are downloading the wrong drivers, if you aren't however be sure to call Sony up and tell them because someone messed up.

You could always google for the new drivers if you know the make of the motherrboard.

I think motherboard for TX is not generic MB, it probably is made by a motherboard manufacture for SONY TX model only. Having said that, I checked out BIOS of my PC and it says blank in (two entries prior to UID) Computer name and Model name. I am thinking this may be the problem. To TX owners out there, can you post values for those two fields?
    Thanks

You can bypass those damn model checker, just extract it with Universal Extractor and you will found your driver in there.

Although the motherboard has been changed, old driver should be work. Just give it a try.

    Good Luck!

it says that there isnt any unlocked drivers posted for my model.
and when i got o model home from vaio support center, it says "We're sorry, but we were unable to recognize the model number you supplied. Please visit our Support home page at esupport.sony.com and reselect your region, product and model again before requesting specific information from the support website."

one more thing...does this change anything if im using Windows Vista?
sorry i didn't mention this earlier

there is a very good way to bypass the model check built into all sony drivers. go to c:\windows\model.txt
check the model number in it. change it to the model whose drivers you have downloaded and save it. you may have problems because of permissions. first take ownership of that file in properties. after changing the file text, remove ownership of all users and system ie disallow write access to all users and system. now run your drivers file. an error should come right in the beginning. however the setup continues.
the above solution is for vista. i have no idea about xp. try to check for model.txt file somewhere. it could work...

your WMI is probably corrupt which means a full windows reinstall. Google WMI and youll see what I mean sometimes it can be fixed without a reformat but I had to reformat my machine when it happened to me

Ran in this problem on my FZ283 also. There are a few udates that resolve the ID of the RAM CPU problem. Reinstalling the Sony Shared Library is another poss. solution once the CPU patch is applied. What system do you have?

SZ650N/C. I tried reinstalling Shared Library but not sure which patches you are referring too.

For you it would be "Sony® Processor Patch - Corrects the CPU (Central Processing Unit) information listed in Device Manager" located on the Sony esupport site http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNSZ650NC Have you installed this update? After trying this update you can also try resetting the bios.

Ok I figured out the SIMPLEST answer to the updates issue. Sony just doesn't want to allow you to install unintended drivers and software for your laptops. It makes sense until their system screws up and won't allow you to install stuff that you need or in my case stuff I want :)

When you change the model.txt file everyone is talking about, it will take your system all of 5 seconds to recognize your "typo" and conveniently change it back for you.

That 5 seconds is your window of opportunity.

    1. Open up the window/models.txt in notepad.
    2. Get your driver install program to the next prompt before install begins.
    3. Change models.txt to the model you need
    4. You have about 5 seconds to begin the install process. It will check the file and then continue the install.

Hope thats clear to everyone :)

Is this hack stickied? Because it SHOULD BE! I installed Windows 7 on my Sony VGN-TX46C/B, but wasn't able to use my FN key for brightness, nor the volume buttons because there were no vista drivers for this model.

However, I found that the VGN-TX56C/B model had proper vista drivers, and together with this hack to bypass Vaio's system check, I was able to regain the use of my button controls in 7!

    Thanks man!
