i picked up a new tx2 the other day to replace my dying tr1mp. the machine is fantastic aside from the one problem that plagued the tx1 - the fan noise.

the idle temperature is around 59-61c, the problem with this is that the fan is set to kick in at 60c so it keeps spinning on and off repeatedly.

is there some way to change the temperature to 65 or something? i have lokoed in the bios and there is nothing in there, NHC is of no use either since the fan control only works with samsung and asus notebooks. what is the likelihood of sony releasing a bios update to adjust the temp?

other ideas i have had are to open the machine and try to replace the fan with the one from the tr1 but i dont know if it would fit, or alternatively to disconnect it altogether and see how it fares (i will keep an eye on the temperature constantly).

i have even tried undervolting but this hasnt dropped the temps below 59c, even at 6*.700. the noise is driving me insane! i would take it back but there is nothing else comparable out, and everything else about the machine is fantastic!

I assume you're in Europe because the tx2 is not shipping in the US yet.
All the reports indicated that one of the changes Sony made to the tx2 was the removal of the fan. In fact, I think I read a press release on the German sony website to that effect.
Your message seems to imply that this is not the case. I 'm disappointed because I returned my tx1 explicitly because I wanted to wait for the tx2 with the heatpipe technology.
How about the screen? Is the backlighting on the fringes better than the tx1? can you still see uneven backlighting at the top and bottom?
    TIA,
    razi

So the only change that you can see is the larger hard drive? 80GB vs 60GB?

Hopefully, by the time they ship these here in the states (end of March), the other promised changes will be implemented as well...

    zarekr,

sound like you need to take this up with Sony UK. The excerpt below is directly off their website:

    http://products.sony.co.uk/tx2_fs400_a600.asp

To round things off, an Ultra-Low Voltage (ULV) Intel Pentium M processor with Centrino technology, sophisticated power management and fan-free cooling gift the Sony VAIO TX2 with up to 7.5 hours battery life from a standard battery.
