When i reach speeds of up to 60 kb/s, the movies i play which are .avi format really starts to lag? Is it because of my 1gb ram? or is it just poor processor speed to cope with it? thx

your RAM could be the limitation depends how many services are you running on the background. Open up the resource monitor in Vista and see how many mb of RAM you are using while playing.

if you are playing some compressed format of avi, which require decoding, your experience depends on the CPU. again open up the resource monitor and inspect CPU usage.
