I removed and reinstalled the drive. Now it starts up ok, it'll turn on/on. But if I stick a cd in and it reads, then I eject it, and try and load in another cd, it won't read that new cd. If I reboot the computer, it'll read the new cd, but wont read any new cds inserted.
Also, once I stick in a cd, it wont turn off the drive anymore.

3 reboots later. It seems this isn't always the case, now it'll read 2 different cds, and turn off/on. but on the 3rd reboot. it failed again. grr.

Check to see what processes are running. Sometimes an application or process is "using" the drive without you knowing. Some examples are programs like Winamp or other media players, even if you are not actually using a disc in the program. End any process that you think might be using the drive.

I have no idea about why your drive can read one disc but can't read another disc after you eject the first one. I don't have the issue you speak of on my TZ150.

I wonder if something borked your power settings. Try turning off power management and give it a go.

Hmm although maybe I never caught on that I had this issue when I had the beta sp1 on the laptop, but something is causing it not to shut down. Something has to be using the cdrom drive in order for it to respond as it does. But its a "clean" install from using the Sony recovery disks. Removed bloatware. did all the updates, then sp1 from windows update. Nothing new installed yet.

I'll try and turn off the power managment and see if that helps. Is there a easy way of doing that without uninstalling the software?

Simply click on the battery icon in the notification area and select "Power Management Off"

I've been running SP1 since I purchased my TZ (RC and now RTM). I do not have this problem. I have the factory Vista Business install, sans crapware.

I also played around and seems that after install of SP1, the cdrom would not turn off. However, I went into power management and selected "ultimate battery" and it now turns off. So I went back to my original settings, "balanced" and I am now able to turn on and turn off the cdrom. Re booted a few times and all seems back to normal. Can't offer any reasoning behind this other than perhaps if you change your seetings in viao power management, and then back, you might be able to turn off the cdrom.

So, select ultimate battery (which isn't a normal choice) when it doesn't turn off (saying the cdrom is in use, when nothing is using it) then once I can, then switch back to balance then all is well? Ok, I'll try that next time.

I'd recommend using Ultimate or Maximum as your primary power plan and customizing it.

I would appreciate knowing why ultimate or maxium should be used. I beleive balance was the default when I first got the TZ and I have just left it on that selection. Not being critical by any means, just trying to learn more about the TZ and what is reccommended for best practices. Thanks in advance.

The "Balanced" power plan, unmodified, leaves the screen color depth at 32bits and doesn't use some of the higher-end power management features that Sony's add. On my TZ150, Balanced leaves the CDROM on, for example.

There are a few threads detailing the finer points.
