I currently use sz270p, it contains core duo cpu. Can I buy a core 2 duo cpu then upgrade my laptop to core 2 duo? Are the mainboard compatible with each other?

The socket is the same so the chip will fit.

The question is whether or not you can find an appropriate BIOS that will properly recognize the new chip and properly adjust the core voltage, and FSB/RAM speeds and ratios...

I just wonder if the current BIOS can support it.

Supposedly the older SZ does support Merom with it's current BIOS already in place. I couldn't really make much sense out of whether the results were really positive or negative from the translated page in the link, so make of it what you will.

Newegg has the 1.83 Core 2 Duo... not sure where else has them or different speeds (this appears to be all Newegg has and i found it using pricewatch.com)

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819111303&ATT=19-111-303&CMP=OTC-pr1c3watch

    ** Edit **
They also sell the 2.33 as well ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819111300), but for $670, ouch
    ********

What i am wondering is the jump from 32-bit to 64-bit, to me it just seems like there would be more than just the CPU itself for this, but i'm probably just being paranoid

I ended up just buying a new SZ370P/C. My dad is clueless about computers so it wasn't hard to get him to want to pay $2000 for my SZ270P/C even though I've already sent it in for warranty service in the three months that I've had it (bad touchpad buttons). Do you think I'd be lucky to get $1500 for the laptop on eBay or would I have gotten more?

You too? My touchpad buttons crapped out on me about 5 months in. Now that I've got it back I'm almost afraid to use them for fear they'll give out again right about the time my warranty expires. Pity seeing as how this notebook has otherwise been for the most part great.

Anyone have any first hand knowledge of this working... I was torn between the 260 and the 330, but went with the 260 for the premium screen. When I move to Vista (I'll be a late late late adopter) I'll need the 64-bit on the Core 2... is it just a drop in replacement? How good are the chances of Sony providing us with a BIOS update?

    Thanks

He needs alot of help with computers. I've still got to figure out a way to convince him that issuing the shutdown command is preferable compared to what he does now which is holding down the power button or pulling the plug after he's done with the computer. He can barely figure out how to even find the program to connect him to the wireless.

Why would that be, since Vista will come in both 32 and 64-bit flavors? I'm running 32-bit Vista right now. On the other question I think that the likelihood of Sony releasing a BIOS specifically to allow users to upgrade is about slim to none. They're in the business of trying to sell you a new computer and I don't believe they are apt to hand anyone the tools they need to extend the life of their current one. But that's just my take, and maybe they'll surprise the dog poo out of all of us. Who knows?
