    Hi,
I am considering purchasing my first notebook as a Sony. I was wondering how possible it was to upgrade hardware not through Sony and is so how this would affect an on-site warranty.

I am strongly considering the Sony s270 but fastest HD speed is 5400rpm I really would want a 7200rpm. Also they don't have a DVD burner option, another feature I would like.

Anyone had any experience of adding components in after? Are there sites other than sonystyles, where you can configure an s270 with a 7200rpm? Or that would support my own upgrade?

Also, I assume its possible to upgrade at a later date with Sony, any got information on how this works? I have heard that Sony charges a premium for this.

    Thanks
    Dave

I would think that upgrading the hard drive to a 7200 or 10K HD may effect heat and power draw. As long as the drive you install has the same power requirements as the original drive it should work fine

I wouldnt even bother asking Sony to upgrae it for you tho,,,

As far as the language of the warrenty as I understand it your warrenty is still valid as long as you replace the stock parts before send it in for service. And if there is no internal damage.

Sounds like the way to go is get the s270 with the lowest spec HD then upgrade immediately to a faster drive. I am thinking get the 1.6 chip and 512mb ram then upgrade those in about 6 months when prices come down.

Not only is the harddrive upgradeable, but the CPU is socketed.
