if i was to upgrade my ram and hdd would this void my 3 year warranty as i would be opening my laptop, although only the service panel. I noticed that it tells you how in the user guide but im not sure whether i should.

You would probably have gotten more replies if you had mentioned what machine you have in the subject. Many (if not most) people skip whatever subjects doesn't match their own machines.

the computer i am talking about is the one in my signature it has a 3 year warranty and i dont want to lose this in case my gpu fails or something but i want a new hdd and to upgrade to 4gb ram and i want to do these upgrades myself

Depends on how accessible they have made RAM/HDD. Typically, RAM can be exclusively accessed just by opening a small panel. In that case, no, you are not violating the warranty. If the same is true for HDD, same applies. However, if you have to take apart your computer to install it, then yes you will be violating the warranty.
I know with my old Dell, they've made HDD very accessible, so it won't violate the warranty. However, with my Sony Z, I have to take the whole thing apart, so in that case, that will violate the warranty.
Both of my laptops, I can upgrade RAM without warranty violation.
Anytime there's a potential to "mess up", such as taking apart your computer, they won't honor the warranty, unless they do it themselves. -
ok thanks i have a panel underneath for upgrading these component and it is in the user manual anyway so i dont see why not.
