I unexpectedly found an older used Sony Vaio PCG-FX190 for sale for $400 with an SXGA screen. It's the hi-res screen that I'm highly attracted to. I gave up researching notebooks because I don't have the $$ for a new one and the SXGA is a must for me since I'm a photographer.

It's 850mgz, 20gb HD, 256 ram, no battery. A cursory search says I'll have to pay around $125 for a battery, probably the same for a ram upgrade.

Does anyone have any experience with this machine? I'll be going to look at it tomorrow and it with an end cost of about $600 (with upgrades), it seems like a good deal but I'm not sure.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

I've seen older IBM Thinkpads like T22 or T23s with SXGA+ screens go for between $400-600 on ebay with a battery.

I think IBM will offer you better build quality than Sony, but being able to see before purchase is nice. Many of the ones on ebay are off lease units. Don't forget about upgrading to a faster hard drive when you can swing it, you'll have a nice little machine. Good Luck.

Personally, I could not live on a slower hard drive, but if you can live with it thats OK too. You'll definetly notice a system performance increase if you put a faster drive. I'm guessing you can pick up a 40GB 5400RPM drive in the $50-60 range on ebay. I just got one myself for an external case.
