I want to put a bigger hard drive into a sony vaio vgn nr11z. The existing one is 200GB I want 500GB. I read that the restore disks won't work with a new drive. If I copy the restore partition from the computer onto the new drive before installing it will it work?

Can someone explain how they lock the restore disks to a certain drive

Never bothered to find out. Strongly urge you to learn how to do a clean install. Find a clean install thread for your model. Download the drivers from Sony and go ahead. If you have switchable graphics, get the driver from the hybrid graphics thread.
