i have some questions regarding the new vaio Z:
    - is there a big difference in performance between the 200 GB 7200 RPM drive VS the SSD 128 GB that justifies the $1000+ difference?
    - How will i get the XPP downgrade when i choose Vista Business?
    - I have a PS3 with blueray, is it wise to get the blueray drive in the Z and pay $500 extra?
    - some people say dont get a CTO and the specs i need are not found in the pre conf. models. Are CTO's quality less than the pre conf. ones?

    Thanks

    Your asking questions... ;)
Well, the XP downgrade disc should be provided, but the drivers may not be, also the utilities may not be.
Regarding the HDD and the SSD, I've read somewhere in the forum that Sony uses very expensive SSDs, therefore the huge price difference.
And you blue ray, it depends what you want to do with you laptop.
Do I ask you if I should get another USB flash drive, as I've already got 2??
    No.
It you want to watch blue ray "on the go" you might want it, but if you don't why should you go for a more expensive blue ray drive?
And the quality - I can't tell from experinece, my German SZ (!!!) was "off the belt" as they don't do CTO in Europe.
But the quality should be equal, I couldn't see why it shouldn't be.

It depends how much you care about Word launching in 6 seconds vs. in 2 seconds.

Here you can get an impression of what a good SSD (Samsung SATAII) does to your system: http://blog.laptopmag.com/in-depth-with-the-ocz-core-series-low-cost-ssd

CTO quality is not the same as preconfig, and not made in Japan like the preconfig most likely. I know from first hand experience from my SZ780 which I returned.

I think most of VAIO Notebook were made from China for many years.

    neo7s,
which ones, the CTO or the preconfigured ones?
The preconfigured ones seem to be from Japan (even though components possibly are from China).

I believe that it depends where did you order that CTO...was it sonystyle.jp or the US one? I rememeber that some time ago someone said sony has three places where they're making CTO models. btw...where was your CTO model made...US?

That's it...I'm curious if you would order it in sonystyle.jp, if it would be 'made in Japan' or not....if so, I wouldn't be worried about CTO.

I'm quite sure that all Japanese CTOs are made in Japan.

In fact, I would be surprised if not...everyone who was in Japan knows, how's it working...if there is not label 'Made in Japan' on it, it's half price and most of people think, it's dangerous to buy.

Anyway, if the CTOs are made in Japan, I'm not worried....all of them will get checked and stamp, which person did it....and you can be sure, that that person would be quite unhappy if some of the Vaios with his name on it would get returned.

The point is that CTOs ordered from Japan are made in Japan - not necessarily the CTOs here in the US. So if you order from Conics or Dynamism, it'll be made in Japan. Outside of that, who knows.
