    HI guys.

    just a quick question

Im looking at buying a sony vaio sz machine, and have also been looking at the dell xps 1330. The premium sz has a very thin LED screen, it seems very flimsy, are there any issues with this thin a screen? How do the dell and vaios compare, if i assume i can get similar specs, are the sz a better build quality? Im not sure if i want the LED screen as i think it might break it being so thin, and i would be happy with the std screen as its only slightly heavier. So just wondering what people think.

    Cheers

There are couple threads comparing these laptops.

    Sony pro's
    - better build quality (the led screen is not filmsy, as i checked it out personally @ best buy)
    - Better Led screen
    - More professional and sleek look (I like the "black" of it, personal preference)
    - battery life (ability to switch to stamina (integrated graphic mode)

    Dell's pro

    - Price ( dell with the similar config to the sony will be atleast 100 cheaper but has 3 yrs rather than 1 yr warranty of sony. which is anyother 100 - 200)
    - the video output
    - CS's quality
    - 128mb vga > sony's 64mb

Anyway, I haave been considering between the m1330 vs the sz 7xx series. And I guess I will choose Sony's finally. Because of its resell value, the better build quality, and I trust sony more (owned a Sony FZ) than dell

Those are all in the Sony forum, so they might be biased. I'd look in neutral forums and reviews as well.

thats interesting, when i looked at the premium model i felt the screen was very very thin and tended to bend a bit, the sales guy, got the screen and pretty much bent it around in his hands, i was shocked, when he closed the lid it didnt appear to take much pressure to make it bend and touch the keys. if you sat something on it, it looked like the screen would eventually get crushed into the keyboard?

i think i preferred the solidness of the slightly lower spec model, had a nice enough screen for me, and gave it some protection.. only problem is you cant get that lower spec unit in black :( pitty..

Is there really a huge difference between the premium and the std version, the sales guy went on about carbon fiber and this and that.. just wanted to know if for the extra $1200nz if its really worth it..

for me, the price worths it. It will not be huge difference (in terms of performance.) But you know you are paying premium money for the premium look , and quality. So if you weight price / performance > build quality / appearance. you are better off with other laptops

i find the sz premium far superior to the m1330, but i am bias obviously.
i find dell's very run-of-the mill and mainstream: good affordable work machines, but if i had the extra money i would definetely fo wiht the sz over the m1330. but try to buy with without all the bloatware as it is truly a pain.

The resale value of the SZ are not so great in the UK anyway. Sony SZ models that cost like £1,699 a few months back can be had on Ebay used for about £600-£700 this is less than half price in less than a year. If you spend like £900 on a Dell M1330 and get one that is decently speced you should able to get at least half of your money back. It all depends how much you have invested in the notebook in the first in regards to resale value.

Looks are a matter of preference.

In regards to the screens Dell uses all different types of screens i had one and i was extremely happy with the screen and many reviews have praised the screen that this notebook has. Some people who have used both computers don't think that there is any difference between either computers in this area.

What is better really depends on your own needs. If you are more into multimedia then the Dell might be better for your needs.

The SZ7 premium model weighs in at 4lbs and there like .2lbs between both of these notebooks.

OP as you know the notebook that you are considering does not have the LED screen. LED screen are more power efficient than CCFL screens. The LED screen should give you slightly better battery life than you would get if you opted for the CCFL screen. It will also give a better picture also. The CCFL screen should be fine though.

If the Dell is better at multi-media, what is the Sony better at?

Hmm. Ya know, I've done a ton of research on these two machines (Sony SZ and Dell m1330). To be honest, I can't really find a solid reason why the Sony is worth the extra money.

Can anyone bottom-line us on why you feel the Sony is worth the extra money?

    Thanks...

IMO, both are pretty similar with each having its own good and bad points. My humble suggestion is to just go with any one of them that you like. I'm sure you'll like either one of them.

Unfortunately in my country, there isnt a way to see or feel a dell unit unless i buy it. and i dont believe we have the ability to do returns :( i wish i knew someone locally that had a dell so i could check it out and feel it.. the sx is very nice, but i wouldnt be buying the premium model. i do like the fact is has a docking station, the dell doesnt, but that doesnt realy matter, as the dell has hdmi
