i've been poking around this forum for a while looking for info on laptops. since this is my first laptop ever, i definitely wanted something i would absolutely love. after several months of excrutiating research and banging my head on the wall, i finally decided to go with the CTO sony tz with the following specs:

    1.33ghz proc
    120g hdd
    2gb ram
    vista business
regular black color (premium black was not an option on my CTO model)
    $1510 shipped

so, i just wanted to thank the people on this forum that have been helped me make my decision. additionally, extra thanks to those who steered me away from the champagne gold color. i went to the store and it looks more silver under the store lighting, which was pretty cool. however, i convinced the sales person to come with me outside so i could see it in natural light. found out it looked too 'gold' for my tastes.

anywho, thank you one and all and i'll definitely be using the tips, tricks and tweaks i see on here to get the most out of my new baby.

i bought the CTO model. it's got the same specs as the 270, but has the black cover instead of the premium carbon black.

corporate discount + $100 gift card.

initially, at the sony store in seattle, they told me it was 10% discount. but, i figured out, for the CTO model, ordering online, the discount was 28%!! don't know if that's an error on sony's part, but who the hell cares!

hopefully they'll honor the price even if they do figure out they screwed up.

amen to that. now begins the 2 week wait.

anyone know if CTO models actually take as long as the website says to ship? i think my expected ship date is 4/25!

Carl did you go to University village?
I have not ordered yet but I will here within the next few days.
I am still torn between Sony store and Portable one.
Portable one has the U7600 while I can get the U7700 from Sony Styles for the same pric.

i did go to U village. just know though, if you work at or know someone that works at a certain large company in the seattle area, you can get the same 28% discount online (on CTO models). online site is also running a promo for free upgrade to 2gb ram and 100g hdd.

the only reason i got the u7700 proc was because i had the $100 gift card. otherwise, i would have gone with the u7600. i just figured i'd splurge a little.

i'd say the main reason to go with Portableone would be to avoid the sales tax (which I recently found out got bumped to 9%). i may use portableone to buy the bloatware free XP disc at some point. i haven't played enough with vista business to make up my mind on whether i'll keep it on this laptop or not.

the main reason to go with U village is that if something goes wrong with the laptop within 30 days, you're right in the area and can just go get a replacement. (you may want to double check on the 30 days return policy)

pricewise, i think portableone was $100 less for the tz250. what model are you looking at?

I am thinking of the CTO from Sony which has the U7700 w/ 120 HDD.
The Portable one has U7600 w/100 HDD. TZ250B

    The price is identical.
I have till Monday or Tuesday to order. I will deceide this weekend.

tough call. one thing to keep in mind is whether the free upgrades from sony on the CTO model will be around next week.

for what it's worth, if I didn't have the discount going thru sony directly, i probably would have gone with portable one.
