I have a vgn-fe21b and did a clean install of windows 7, did not install the vaio software. Now the videocard is not recognized and I can not get the resolution it can handle. Looks like I am in safe mode. However I can not find a suitable driver anywhere. It's a NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400. The driver form the nvidia site does not work, it does not recognize the card.

    Any suggestions how to proceed?

Try the MS Update 257.41 driver linked in my clean install guide.
