    hey guys,

so i have a sony VPC z116ga it has the 1600X900 lcd screen. Just a few days ago i was browsing online and i noticed a group of 5 or so blue pixels appear on the left part of my screen. i tried restarting, using the various stuck LCD programs to get it back but nothing worked. I also tried gently massaging the pixels but whenever some of them disappear, more appear.

after leaving it for a few days i now have over a billion (exaggerating) blue pixels. it formed a line down my screen plus some others around this line.

are these stuck or dead pixels? they are all blue.

could this be the cable to the lcd? or is it the lcd itself?

i have taken apart my laptop a few months ago to install a second drive instead of the optical drive.

I have also taken it apart a couple of months ago to tighten the lcd hinge screws as they were clicking. nothing damaged when i did this and no pixels appeared till now. Could this be related?

what can i do to fix my screen? a replacement screen costs waaay to much.

see pics to get a better idea. (few days ago vs now)

If it's under warranty send it to Sony to get the screen replaced.
It happened to me on my VPCZ117GG.
What you see is bruising on the LCD due to pressure. I got my screen replaced for free under warranty.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

i had that problem too, the reason is pressure on the screen (ie you put the something heavy on the laptop), call sony they will replace it if it under warranty otherwise you are SOL.

edit: don't let sony know that you open the laptop apart, they won't honor the warranty

What did you put on your laptop that could've caused the pressure? My Z has been stepped on and had a pile of books dropped on it and its still fine. Or maybe I'm just lucky lol.

i take amazing care of my electronics. i never put any pressure on it. i keep it in a padded sleeve inside my padded backpack. i don't think it is under warranty. it has been more than a year. i guess im stuck with it. i'll see if i can get a good price on a replacement screen. if not ill just live with it :(

thanks for the responses, i had a feeling there was no cheap solution to the problem.

I had that problem, they replaced the screen.
EDIT: Nevermind, mine wasn't that bad it was a cluster of stuck/dead pixels, not a long strip like yours...

@homie_g: speak with sony. In europe at least, they have an interesting scale consisting of three price levels for any out-of-warranty repairs they conduct. I would not be surprised if they can replace your screen substantially cheaper than what you could manage.

thanks, although when i called sony support in the past, they told me that my model was not showing up in their system and so is not supported. (my z11 is from Asia but i am in Canada). I am currently in Asia and just waiting for my dvd drive (i installed a hard drive instead of the optical drive) to reach me from canada so i can swap it back and see if i can get it fixed under warranty. Although i am almost certain that they will do nothing, the support here is generally horrible and warranties do not mean unfortunately.

Oh man...I have also have a z11 and my screen is at least 5x worse than yours. I have about a 2 inch BLOB of blue/dead pixels on my screen, I can't even see half the stuff on the internet because it's in the middle of the screen. I also take very good care of it and these appeared out of nowhere a few weeks ago. I've had the computer since Mar 2010 and my computer is out of warranty. I charged the $2500 computer onto my Amex Platinum and filed for their extended warranty claim. I provided all the documentation needed and they are either providing a refund or fixing the screen which must cost at least $500 minimum. I am still waiting on the outcome, so I am not sure, but they will definitely be doing something about.

    ^^

My Z13 has endured quite some abuse and the screen is still perfectly fine.

It's probably a manufacturing defect, not caused by individual handling IMO. Otherwise, my screen would've broke and your's shouldn't.

the Z screen is self healing! I kid you not! My old Z550 one day had this tiny little black splotch, I figured somehow I got ink on it, i tried to rub it off and it got bigger and uglier. I have some pics here
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/son...duo-series-owners-thread-996.html#post5449156

and it actually even got worse. One day I decided to accept it and save up for a replacement screen and stopped messing with it. I noticed day after day it would get slightly better. A few weeks later, the screen was 100% ok. I was so confused, I would poke it to see if I could screw it up again.

I donated the Z to my sister for college and the black & green pixels have never returned

Dude, I had the same issue. I got the computer and it was perfect. After 2 days it had a small spot. A few days later it grew like a crack in the windshield. I then called Sony to replace it and they agreed.
Here is the thing, it took their tech over a month to do the repair. In that months time it got worse at first then started to go away for no apparent reason. By the time the tech arrived my screen was completely healed. The tech must have thought I was full of sh!t when I told him to replace it but he did anyway and was cool about it. At least the screen is new now and no stiffness of it coming back.

Agree on that. On my first VPC-Z11, I had quite a bunch of stuck red subpixels in a cluster. They were only noticeable when screen was black and I looked VERY closely. Somehow, after 2-3 weeks of use, they were totally gone. I think this self healing only applies on STUCK pixels when they are switched on and off (training effect). This is what these stuck pixel tools are doing.

In my experience, dead pixels (black holes) won't resurrect as well as pixel lines, severe distortions or other bruises which do have a physical cause in almost every case.

    Cheers.

BTW: My babied Z11 (today one year old, yay!) still in perfect condition. No dead pixels at all. Apart from keyboard wear, looks brand new (got a protector sheet on palmrest so no discoloration here). :D
