i just can't believe that 2000 computer does not come with a on-site service... was i misinformed or is this true??

turnaround time as I was told = 15 days, which I isn't acceptable for me...

Is there any other way to get my Z serviced without the mail-in option?

I'm just afraid that my computer will come back in worse state than it was in before...with onsite, i can see what they're doing...

I thought all recent (from 2010) VAIO notebook purchases (in the US market) comes with on-site warranty as standard?

By the way, if you end up sending in your VAIO notebook to their service depot for service, be prepared for the turnaround time to take longer than 15 days. :( I recently sent my VAIO SZ381 notebook to their service depot for HDD & fan replacements, even though I have the on-site accidental extended warranty. The turnaround time when I dropped off my VAIO notebook at the local SonyStyle store to when I received my repaired notebook is about 4-5 weeks. :( Yes, it actually took them so long to replace a fan & a HDD!

Depends on where you purchased it and where you are on this not so small globe...! No onsite service is offered in Europe, unless you buy an extra package.

I purchased it from an online retailer..buy dot com. is this why? I'm from the U.S...

The support said I need to send it in because my laptop is one of the most expensive one and they don't allow 3rd party technicians to repair it-- thoughts on this??

I've had a 3rd party tech that Sony hired at my house 4 times to work on my Z. I did not purchase any special warranty but I did buy the computer CTO from sonystyle.com

It is weird that Sony support told you that. Even their so called "official" service depot is run by a 3rd party service company. When I dropped off my VAIO SZ381 for service at my local SonyStyle store, it was sent to a CA repair facility called Nexicore Services/Hartford Computer Group, Inc.
