Hello, I've been through all the troubleshooting with the mat****a dvd-ram uj-850s ata CD/DVD RW on my Vaio. I did the registry (upper/lower filters) thing, deleted all my burning software, cleaned it with rubbing alcohol, uninstalled/reinstalled drivers, etc.

After all this, and moving the little optical drive reader back and forth, I've got it to read some of the DVD's it wasn't reading before. But it still won't read any RW's. So I have resigned myself to getting a new one but haven't had much luck searching and haven't called Sony yet. I also couldn't find the specs in Device Manager or by searching.

So I'm looking where I can find a new dvd drive for this Vaio. Also, when searching what is it best called? DVD drive, optical drive, CD/DVD Rom, etc.?

I spent about 5 hours on forums and working with this thing yesterday and I'm at the end of my rope.

    Edit:

The name of the DVD drive has a curse word in it. Mat$hita or Matsu$hita.

    Edit:

It is about a year and a half old and not warranty, no service agreement was purchased.

If you want to change model, you need to be very careful about getting something the correct size and interface, with the connectors in the correct place for your laptop. If your drive used to work OK with RWs but it's just broken, I would just search for the specific model and try to replace it like-for-like, to minimise any problems you might have with installation.

Yes, it was reading RW's before. I guess I'll call Sony and see where I can find a replacement.

I called Sony. $470 for a replacement drive. Does anyone know a good online store where I can give them my notebook info and they can look up a compatible drive to sell me?

    Pell Technology (the above link)...
They kept my laptop for 3-4 months and asked me to pay $495 for motherboard replacement (they say), after one more month when I asked if they repaired it they said they don't have the parts, I waited about 2 more weeks and they send the laptop back, (NOT fixed).
Now they will not send me the money back, it is over 2 months since I made this payment, they keep saying that they will refund but they don't do it :(
10 days ago someone finally answered the phone and asked for the full card number and invoice number and said I will see the refund in few days... they lied again.
As far as I am concerned this is fraud.
