ok- my Dad lent his viao to a customer and of course they managed to crack the screen. No major problem- $350 for a compatible screen on ebay. I told him to let me do the swap- but he decided to do it himself...
The backlight quit working. Normally this is not a big deal- but this is the LED backlight, and I have NO information on how these work as of yet. I looked at it- put the old screen back in, and it's the same thing- screen works great- backlight is completely dead. Checked the connectors, and made sure everything is seated properly. No idea what happened or how he managed to kill the led backlight. YES- I made sure they are the same screens etc.
So- he sends it in to sony for an out of warranty estimate. $699.00 for a new motherboard. ??? WHAT? I'm a little confused as to why it needs a new motherboard. I now have a VERY expensive motherboard that works except for the backlight power? I'm wondering if there is more to this than just replacing the motherboard. Seems a little screwy to me- and I'm looking for a way to figure out what the power requirements for the backlight are to see if there is some way to test it. Of course nobody is talking- I have no options other than trying to reverse engineer the display board, and see if I can find the led light controller chip... if ANYONE has any insight- I'd love to hear about it. I wonder if they just replaced the connector cable from the motherboard to the lcd- but unfortunately I did not have time to "mark" the parts before it was sent off for a very expensive repair.
I just find the whole experience disappointing- no information as to what really happened and no real information as to the REASON the backlight failed other than "replace the motherboard"

The Backlighting on the LED screens is controlled by a circuit on the motherboard. No seperate inverter. so they will just replace the motherboard. not just the controller circuit..

Hmm... I hope this doesn't happen to me, I bought the same LCD from the same seller ($350), it is waiting in customs as we speak. I'll let you know how the replacement goes. Maybe you short circuited one of the connectors or damaged one of the wires while you were putting it in? Is the backlight completely off, or is it just at the lowest setting?

no- the backlight went completely dead. I'd suggest making sure you are well grounded and double check the connections before you try it. We know the backlights work on both units- but something happened during the replacement- maybe it did get shorted- who knows? I did not get to do the work- so I can't say for sure. Please let me know how your replacement goes. I'm hoping this was just a bad luck and poor timing- but we'll see.

Hey, I just replaced the screen and it is flawless, no dead/stuck pixels or any lines associated with faulty led backlights. I almost made the mistake of not putting the LCD cables in the right place (ie, the back and white cables coming from the lcd). The black one goes on the bottom plug, and the white one goes on the top plug. Other than that, I don't know what could have went wrong?

BTW, mine is the A revision, made in china, whereas the broken one I had before was the Y revision made in Japan. Which revision do you have?

white and black wire? This laptop only has the single ribbon connector to the lcd- and possibly the antenna wires are the black and white. Anyway- the revision is - umm...not sure. Part number was LTD111excy on the old lcd, and ltc111excz on the new one.

BTW-If you bought it from that pccentre guy in hong kong- WATCH out! he is a real jerkoff if you need support, or anything. He tried to screw me with a chinese knockoff once- I returned it and had to file with paypal to get my money back even after I sent the part back (AT MY EXPENSE) and then the bastard tried to file a non receipt of the return thru paypal. AVOID this ebay seller.

Hmm.. You are right, the thin wires do not connect to the lcd itself. Anyway, might be worth a shot to switch them and see what happens, or triple check with the diassembly guide?

My old one was japanese, but this one is made in china (even though the picture showed made in japan). However, it looks just as good as the old one. The unit itself looked and felt identical, the only difference was the revision letter and the fact that it was "china" instead of "japan". The seller I bought from is "bogielives" and he gives a one year warranty, and the lowest price I found on ebay or anywhere else. This is why I bought from him. Anyway, no dead pixels (which is what I am always worried about when buying lcds) so I am pleased.

Did you notice any difference between the chinese knockoff and your old one?

Just one more thing, the A revision which I have has a kind of "reddish" tint when looking from a horizontal angle.
