Hi all. I have vista x64 on my vaio sz6 laptop and was thinking about the great Windows XP classic logon screen(press ctrl+alt+delete to logon and how it had empty boxes to enter user name and password). I was able to get this working properly on 1/2 computers w/ vista but i have small issues on the laptop. heres what i did:

(this particular method only works for vista business/ultimate users..there are other ways though w/ regedit)
    > Type secpol.msc in Vista's Start Menu Search Bar and hit Enter. This will open the Local Security Policy editor. Navigate to Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options. Now on Right hand side, look for Interactive Logon: Do not display last username. Right click on it and open its Properties. Set it to Enabled > Apply. dont close everything out yet though.

    > right underneath that setting is Interactive logon: Do not require CTRL+ALT+DEL. Right click on it and open its Properties. Set it to Disabled > Apply

The 2 problems only on the laptop are:
    1) ctrl +alt + delete will only work 1 time before the welcome screen
    2) on the vista welcome screen...it shows me the box that says Please swipe your finger to login(upek) AND it gives the name "Other user", which isnt an user account that ive made. (phantom account) If i click on "Other User"..it then gives me the empty boxes to enter user name and password. where is this "Other User" coming from?? ive even tried logging in with "Other User" w/o a password and of course it says failed to logon.

I think the upek fingerprint software(v5.8, etc) or tpm v3.0.2.2 software is causing this issue because they are the only difference between my laptop and my desktop. my desktop works perfect just w/ doing whats above. (Ex. says ctrl + alt + delete to log on every time and also 2 blank fields w/ user name and password.) this is just a nagging thing and not a huge deal but any suggestions or if you could try and see what it does for you would be appreciated! thanks.

im back w/ some good news!! id given up for a while but im back on the case. i figured out how to get ctrl + alt + delete to show everytime before the welcome screen.

    1) go to start > type regedit
    1) go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Protector Suite QL\1.0\Settings
    3) find donotshowCTRLALTDELmessage on the RHS, Right click on it and click modify and set to 0.

It turns out protector suite WAS overriding the other setting i made in the first post. i will continue to troubleshoot to see if i can have just the empty boxes to enter user name and password and also be able to use fingerprint s/w.

Very nice. Had same problem (except I didn't need the ctr/alt/del enabled). Good to no longer have user name revealed at log on. Thanks.

alright, im back again and have this issue resolved as far as im concerned. previously, i was able to get ctrl+alt+del to logon message every time before the welcome screen. now, ive managed to get it to go to the empty picture box w/ blank fields for username and password right aftwerwards!!

Note: You have to use Protector Suite 5.6(i installed mine w/o the additional registry patch for vista x64) for this to work properly. Also, you will have to manually enter your username and password on the welcome screen. once you logon to windows and use Internet Explorer, etc....you can then swipe finger and register websites using your fingerprint.

    1) go to start > type regedit
    1) go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Protector Suite QL\1.0\Settings
    3) find PSLogon on the RHS, Right click on it and click modify and set to 0.
