I get the sound when you connect and disconnect a usb key randomly when using the laptop. No USB devices are plugged in.... what's wrong?

Many of the internal devices are on the USB bus so if you have loose innards it would cause that.

Does it happen when you connect/disconnect AC power, or switch power profiles? Power saving schemes can disable certain devices to save power, and Windows sometimes treats this disabling/enabling as the same as "device connected"/"device connected".

This happens to me as well. Seen it mentioned a bunch of times here on the boards. Ive tried disabling Bluetooth, the camera and the fingerprint reader but it still happens. Eventually it leads to a BSoD after a couple weeks.

Its the camera, in my case. It happens every time I open and close the lid - I disabled the webcam, and it works just fine now.

Happens quite often on my SZ650, and that from the first day...
I use the preloaded Vista install, happens on a fresh install too?
I don't know what it might be... But anyway, nothing is broken, everything works perfectly, so...

Me too on SZ640 and original windows.
When that sound is heard, I see my fingerprint software icon in the tray disappears and then reappears.

I have and SZ6 with a fresh install P1 image, and I get the same connect/dissconnect sounds. They occur at totally random times: it may be sitting there, untouched, and I hear the noise. Bizarre.

Has anyone tried unchecking "allow the computer to turn this device off to save power" on various items in device manager?

really? the fingerprint sensor? I can see that it could be, since its got to be one of the USB devices, but I dont understand why it does that. Could you explain why it does that? is it like a power saving mode or something?

No, sorry I really can't! I have no idea about that...
I don't think it has something to do with power saving since it reconnects right after... Maybe some kind of reinitialization or something...??

i have the same problem on a new SZ750 N/C
i have the Recovery XP software installed on it

totally random times, and it always plays them together in sequence, and nothing stalls/hangs/crashes

i was thinking about disabling the Device Connect sounds under the control panel Sounds

glad to see that it isn't anything bad

I have not timed it but I have the same back-to-back "tone down", "tone up" sound about every hour. I have tried looking at event logs, etc. but no luck.

The solution is to have an file / registry monitor tracker running at all times
to capture the sound event. From there you can go back to the log
and try to find an association that can be reversed.

We know the cause... But no one knows how to prevent the fingerprint sensor from rebooting...

Yes, but with a closer look at the sound event and watching what
processes are involved via Process explorer you can see which handles
are responsible for invoking the event in the first place.

Sometime you need to play an investigative role to find culprets.

There is no solution so far. The fingerprint sensor disconnects and reconnects by itself. It may be power supply to that USB port.

My wife is angry because this sound keeps doing this during the middle of the night. If I forget to turn the sound off before we go to bed, it wakes her up. "ba-bum, bum-ba" randomly and often frequently.
The Sony VGN-SZ750N is running Vista and it does this with or without USB devices plugged in. It will do this when the computer is power save mode as long as the lid is open.

I read somewhere that the built in camera is actually a USB device and that this might be causing the problem, but I don't understand what would set it off in the middle of the night.

    Help!!!

The random connect disconnect occurs on a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ71VN/X too - sometimes it occurs, sometimes it doesn't...

I do wonder whether its more likely on AC though...

But I'm not really bothered by it.

I used to get the same thing on my SZ780. Nothing major, the same USB off followed by an USB ON right away. But only like twice per day. Nothing serious, with no blue screen or anything else. I moved to an SR now.
