So, I'm trying to at least price a Sony SZ6 w/non-Intel graphics and 7200 rpm hard drive since my Dell M1330 on order still has an estimated arrival date of 9/11 to 9/13/07. :( Both are musts for me.

Unfortunately, http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs...false&storeId=10151&catalogId=10551&langId=-1 is useless (doesn't even seem to include the SZ6), all the model numbers are confusing and http://b2b.sony.com/Solutions/product/VGN-SZ680+Build-to-Order+Series says "Price not Available". It's also crazy that http://b2b.sony.com/Solutions/SZ/compare.html is outdated and doesn't include the SZ6.

Is there a non-BTO config that has what I'm looking for?

I'm going to say no, b/c Sony doesn't offer 7200 rpm hard drives. You have to open up the computer and do it yourself. I've done it, and you do need to know what you're doing.

Non-intel graphics means the Nvidia 8400gs, which the SZ 6 series has. All models come with the intel integrated graphics for better battery life and the nvidia gpu for gaming. You get the best of both worlds because you can manually physically switch between both modes with a button at the top of the laptop.

    SZ680 build-to-order series offer 7200rpm hard drive...
all SZ6XX have hybrid graphic systems, which means they have both Intel graphics and dedicated graphics...you can switch before these two depends on what you are doing on your computer...Intel graphics saves battery remember...

you might wanna take a look at www.portableone.com
they are selling SZ6 already...and their services are great...SonyStyle won't sell SZ6 until probably next month...

    How come?

is it not as easy as putting in new memory, is it because you need to open up the whole laptop?

Yes, on the SZ models you have to pop off the keyboard and the palm rest to get access to the hard drive. It doesn't look too hard to do, but I'd hate to void my warrenty doing it. :s

If you purchase from Portable1 you can have them upgrade the hard drive for you, and they offer 7200rpm models. You can also have them remove the bloatware for you when they install it, if you want. :) Also, they're certified to install the hard drives and it doesn't void your Sony warrenty. :D

Anyone here have an SZ6 with a 7200RPM HDD? How is the heat? Battery life?

I was going to do the swap for 7200, but concern regarding heat/component death/not much performance gain (c/w 5400rpm) is changing my mind

I have a SZ2XX with a 7200rpm 200gb hdd (Hitachi 7k200). With 7k200, my vaio runs much faster, but with less heat, less noise, and slightly more power consumption. 7k200 is the best laptop hdd available now.
