I have SONY VGN-FE880E laptop that just lost its ability to start yesterday. I've saved my files off from the HD, but I'm still undecided on what OS should I install. Ideally I want a dual boot system with both XP and Vista. I've read discussions on downgrading to XP but I didn't read anything about 64-bit vs 32-bit. Is it bad idea to install Windows XP 64-bit version? How about Vista? Are 64-bit drivers available from SONY site now? Are there incompatibility running the 64-bit Vista?

    Thanks for any suggestions,

    wfz

    First question:
Are you going to benefit from 64 Bit(s)???

How much RAM have you got? You can't have more than 4GB...
    How fast is your CPU??

Maybe if you post your specs you'll get some detailed answers.

I can't quite see the point of Vista/XP 64-Bit - I've heard/read its faster on suitable systems, however, your laptop isn't a quad-core desktop with 16GB of RAM.

Effectively - your hardware may not see an improvement from a 64 Bot operating system. Now the FE is a bit older as far as I'm aware...

Then: Sony has been, up to now, very bad when it comes to offering 64 Bit dirvers - basically there were none.
They will offer 64Bot Vista on the new FW2xx series though.
At least as a CTO in the US.

But please post specs. And maybe why you think you may need a 64 Bit OS.

Thanks for the great question and answers. I'm going to use Adobe CS4 on it. Come to think of it, none of my applications are 64-bit. With how SONY is supporting, I think keeping with 32-bit is the best option.

    THANKS!
