If I buy the windows 7 upgrade (only $49!) do I have to upgrade my vista or can i keep vista and have windows 7 at the same time in a dual-boot situation? Does anyone know if this is allowed?

    Officially - NO!

But there are always arguments regarding the background of a system when using the "upgrade" disk on a new drive.

Regardless, you would need a 2nd license to dual boot.

    cheers ...

It certainly is "doable". I'm dual booting vista and windows 7 RC right now on my Z. However, when it becomes official in a couple months, I'm not sure about the licensing details. IMO, I should be able to dual boot them if I pay for the full price for the Windows 7 (I can get it from my college for really cheap, I got Vista Ultimate for $10).

The RC uses a different CD key, so that's actually easier to do.

The W7 upgrade uses Vista's CD key I believe, meaning he's trying to dual boot with 1 CD key.

You need to initialize the upgrade process in Vista itself, and the upgrade will check for activated Windows Vista, so no, you can't dual boot.
