Is this still going on? I figure it can't be that bad, and as I'm not overly-strapped for time, now seems like a good time to do it.

I've got Win 7 Pro from Dell, is there any way to upgrade it to Win 8 Pro? Microsoft is charging $90-$150, and seeing as I don't care at all, I just don't feel like paying that much, but wouldn't mind giving microsoft a few bucks...seeing as they'll get lots more when I buy a new laptop and am forced into Windows....

The $15 upgrade is well over, this was for a limited time and only on new machines. It was to upgrade machines close to the time frame of the Windows 8 release. There were other discounts available, but were not quite as cheap and they are over as well................

That deal expired at the end of January, so you're out of luck I'm afraid.

Is there a reason why Win 7 isn't working for you? From all the fancy blocks and using 3rd party to get a start menu back your not really getting much benefits in return going to Win 8. And don't let others tell you it's loads and run faster...that's not really truthful and not much but hearsay and showing numbers will never show up in your everyday work productivity.

Actually with the non NUMA multi core CPUs there is a definate advantage of about 10% perfomance increase in non optimized multi thread apps. This is with intel C2Q and some multi die on a chip AMD CPUs. The same can be said of Windows Server using the Win 8 scheduler. This could breath some life to older and/or lower cost hardware.

These however are specific circumstances. Generally Win8 is just about the same as fresh Win7 stall on the same hardware. That is if loading and using a desktop but yes metro will come up faster than the fully loaded desktop of win7. Where they level out again is getting to fully functional desktops in both OS's on the same hardware. This especially if you have a SSD in both.

That's the problem there aren't drivers for older hardware that will work on W8 that W7 still has and loads well on older hardware that I tried on....D600, B130 those are really old hardware and was able to use W7 but had to use XP drivers to work so there are limits to how a new O/S can load onto a older hardware.

I'll appologize, I don't mean XP era hardware but say that of C2Q. Even getting back to the 965 chipset I understand driver issues start to show up. I think, and I could be wrong, from the PM/GM45 chipset most hardware drivers are solid. Of course there are typical issues like Enduro etc but that can be true of Win 7 as well.

XP drivers will load for Windows 7 in compatbility mode but I for one would advise not getting such a older laptop cause of the incompatible driver issues. I have most laptops in W7 and the vista64 drivers worked in them and the latter laptops will W7x64 drivers and so far they are running fine without much to do about nothing. But they are working fine including the Desktop I am using to type this with and the Dell 1525 that I use at home and work when I have time to use it.

But back to W8 pro upgrade... I would say if your W7 is already working stick with it til they fix the problem with W8. The upgrade isn't worth the paper it is printed on or the headache you have to fix if your software breaks because of it or loose data.
