Ok so I use vista and recently I've been having this weird problem with start up and logging in, my laptop would start up normally and when I enter my login password it would be on a blank black screen for about 2 mins or more, how can I fix this?

Difficult to say--there are a couple of reasons why it might do this

First thing to do, START > right click COMPUTER, choose MANAGE, go to eventvwr and look at the Windows logs for APPLICATIONS and SYSTEM to see if there are any errors there from the last startup where this occured.

Ok on my event start up times there were no errors but I've seen plenty of BCM42RLY errors, I don't know what that is. Thanks for the help though.

Does anybody else know why start up is long? I've already disabled a lot of applications from start up and even the external monitor thingy. Sometimes the black screen doesn't show up, sometimes it does.

BCM42rly has to do with your networking broadcom something or other.

Did you look at both the application and system?

Specifically, what I was wondering was if there is a problem with your event viewer log, which is a big cause of the black screen of death some people have experienced.

If you boot into safe mode, does it ever occur?
