    Hello,

I support VPN at my institution. I have three users with the error message. They are unable to start the service either. I worked with Cisco and they were unable to help as well. Users are running different Internet Security Suites, McAfee IS 2007, Norton IS 2007, and McAfee Antivirus Enterprise version 8.5.

I was able to recreate the problem on my machine, by stopping the service. And then starting the service fixed my problem. This fix did not work for my users. I tried adding Cisco VPN .exes to the firewalls via program control, no luck. I went through the network stacks and device managers to no avail. Hopefully someone has a suggestion for this error.

Good alternative? Plain old ssh (aka Secure Shell) is a better alternative, IMHO. But if your employer has already gone with something else (why? what's wrong with FREE, and WORKS PERFECTLY?), then it's no alternative at all.

    Hello,
Thanks for your posts regarding suggestions. They were all things that I did try previously, but again I appreciate your posts.

I was able to fix the Error 56 problem. It appeared that when clicking on the icon on the desktop it was trying to configure the application, then Error 56 would come up. After several days of working with users, I had the one of the users bring in the machine and was able to fix the problem.

    1. Uninstall/Reboot
    2. In the Registry (regedit) Search for "Cisco" entries (Edit/Find) ***NOTE:Cisco's name is used in another registry item, DO NOT DELETE THIS KEY (ccISCore)
    3. Reinstall and reboot and it should work.

I worked with Cisco VPN support and tried all their suggestions. The last suggestion was to rebuild (re-image) the device. I was reluctant, that is when I found this fix.

    Good Luck Folks!

I dont know what I can offer but I was concerned about incompatibility with Vista for VPN. However just a few hours ago I downloaded and installed the Cisco VPN client specifically for Windows Vista. It is version 5.0.0, and it has this note on our internal website:

NOTE: This is an experimental version of VPN Client for Windows Vista users. Do NOT install this client unless you are using Windows Vista.

I am using it right now and it works perfectly.
