I tried to install it via Windows Update; it wouldn't install. I got a standalone copy and it'd say installing and at about 1/3 of the way, it just craps out and goes away. Anyway I can get it to work? I kinda want it really bad =[

Sorry for the bump

Do you need the language pack to view Japanese font in Browsers? I just had my vista downgraded to XP, but I used to use language packs as well, in XP you would go to language and regional setting, -> Tab to "Language", and there should be two options, "Install File for complex script, and right-left language including Thai", and "install file for East Asian Language". Pop in the CD and install the file & you are good to go.
uh oh, did some googleing and looks like the process in Vista is going to be a little more complicated. Here's the link to the guide; Japanese is in the middle of it, hope this helps.

Oh I can type in Japanese. Apparently in Vista inputting text is far different. If I'm running a game or a program; let's take PBPMaker [a program that makes the EBOOT.PBP file for the PSP], it looks like this:
MangaPSP002 looks like this:
MUIs in Vista is supposed to convert everything to said language - including menus in mostly all programs. I kinda want that [my Japanese is not good but still]
Addendum: I just read that some language packs need other language packs to work [ie, they are dependent on others for some reason. Maybe that's why my installation craps out - I'll let you guys know about the status].
Edit: Changing system locale fixed the problems seen in the screenshot; but I'd like to get that MUI installed. I'll keep this thread updated. Sorry for the trouble, Dragonpet and other NBR users! -
Are you on vista ultimate? You need that to change the MUI.
-
Yarp, I am indeed using Vista Ultimate =)
-
I've had this problem with Vista and many other users too...it was impossible to install a MUI via Windows Update
Let me tell you that I tried A LOT of things with no success...I finally decided to install a fresh copy and it solved the problem -
Oh PLEASE god don't let that happen to me
Did you try without the Windows Update? Should be the same, but still... -
I don't say that I have tried 100% of possible solutions but I have tried all (rare) solutions I found in forums
-
lol, yeah. I changed the system locale and let's see if that works.
Crap, no. Did you get this same error, John?
It says installation complete, but the red X says otherwise. Geez, Microsoft.
Now since I know some of them are dependent on others, I'll download the chinese MUI and see if that works. If it works, I'll see if JP works after that. -
It was the same error message... (and before this dialog, you see that it's installing but, at a specific point, the progress bar rolls back)
Also, the MUI I was trying to install didn't have any dependency -
Just out of curiosity, how do you know if it has dependency?
-
Sorry, I think that only LIP requires parent language

"Because not all of the user interface is translated, LIPs require at least one parent language." -
Lol, that's what I thought too; but for some reason my mind went "What if MUIs needed parent languages too?!?!" I suppose that's how your mind works when you're in situations like these.
Ok so I've been researching, and there was this site that actually had a screenshot of Vista running Windows Script Host - where is it located in Vista? Should I download it? How do I check for what build of Vista I have? =/
EDIT: Whoa, Chinese MUI installed without a hitch! -
Tell us what you did !
-
Well I checked for the build version number - and made sure my Windows Install is the same as the MUI build [in my case it is 6.0.6000.16386]. It was - and my chinese install worked. BTW I downloaded using IE7, and before I ran it I got a dialog that said "Are you sure you want to run it?" and with options "Run" and "<something else>". Nothing too special, really - and I'm tempted to think that it was just my download. Maybe if I restart Windows and try again, JP might work =/
I'm not at home right now so I can't try it. I'll let you guys know. -
Because I meet the same problem.
My OS ver. is Vista x64 Enterprise Trad.Chinese ver.
Excepted Japanese language pack,
every LP can be normally installed.
Did you install the HK ver. Chinese LP ? -

I'm sure whether this will help anybody, but in Vista Ultimate language packs and LIPs are available through Windows Update. Both Chinese Traditional/SImplified installed on my system without problems.
-
OP, you know what, I don't need the Jap. language pack and I can type...
にほんご
中文
and English through Vista Ultimate...while the key thing is to set the unicode to Japanese in the English interface Vista then install "unicode-at-on" (google it yourself, please)
the Jap lang. pack is for changing the whole system interface to japanese... -
Yesterday, I installed Vista x64 Enterprise angain.
But this time, I change my hard drive's partition.
Original OS disk's partition is 20GB, I extended it into 65.7GB
After login to Vista, I just installed hardware's driver
and update Vista's hotfix all.
Of course, it is necessary to identify your Vista is genuine edition first.
Then, I installed Japanses LP and successfully completed.
