On my previous computer (OS: XP) I most recently used Windows Mail. Overall I've been pretty satisfied with WIndows Mail, but I have never used Microsoft Outlook. Now -with my new computer- I'm in doubt what e-mail client to use. I use about 8 through 10 different e-mail accounts.

What do you guys advice? Which one is 'better'? I'd guess Outlook since it doesn't come for free?

If you aren't going to be using the integrated calendering, connecting to an exchange server, or syncing a Windows Mobile phone, stick with Windows Mail. BTW, you should upgrade to Windows Live Mail, it's the successor to Windows Mail.

I agree about using Windows Live Mail. It's a basic barebones mailing client that seldom has any issues or hiccups.

I have used Outlook in the past, but I found that it takes a bit more time to get started and I never made much use of the PIM features.

Outlook has more functions, such as calendar, task reminder, and other office app integrations, it's more than just an email client. There is also Windows Live Mail, it's pretty much the same as Windows Mail, except you can also use it to get your email from your Hotmail accounts. Outlook can retrieve Hotmail emails too, there is free connector from MS that you need to install.

Thanks for your insights! I'll get WLM and stick with that (WLM actually was the client I was using on my old notebook, and not just WM).

I have used both Windows Mail and MS Outlook. I find MS Outlook organises your emails better. Win Mail you have to adjust the columns to see the to, from, date, etc.

    I'm using Outlook - 2002 and now 2007

2007 has been reorganized, and you shoulduse auto archive to speed it up.

I'e got several e-mail accounts running via Outlook and it works fine.
I know thatthe university discourages the use of Live Mail or Outlook express because they say its too closely linked to Internet Explorer... I don't know how though.
(They suggest Outlook or their client)

I use Outlook - and would recommend it. Also, I've got my contcts in there, synchronised from my phone.

I would either use Thunderbird or Outlook on a Windows PC.

    Yes it is, but:

It costs 150€, the same as Home and Student.

Chaeck with your university, they ay offer a cheap package.

Mine here in Sheffield offers Office Professional (full suite) for 40 Pounds!!

(and I paid 150€ for Outlook in summer - Office Home & Student about a year earlier)

Depends what you want to do.

It may be - I haven't tried it, but it becomes difficult when you want to synchronize with for example a BlackBerry - that's where Outlook is better.

I don't have Blackberry, I only buy Simbyan based cell phones, so I really don't know how Thunderbird works with it. For me is the best because of superb integration with Gmail ;).

    P.S.
I have Outlook with Business Contact Manager but I don't use it ;).

I have Outlook without the Business Contact Manager.

I named BlackBerry because that's what I use now.
The same applies to Windows Mobile based devices and as far as I'm aware also SonyEricsson.

Basically - what works best for you is best.

However between Windows Live Mail and Outlook, Outlook is the better client.

I switched from many years of using Thunderbird to Outlook this past year to be able to sync with my Windows Mobile PPC easily. It is possible with Thunderbird, but it far simplier with Outlook.
