Hello all. Apologies if this has been asked before, but I searched and didn't find anything. I also searched Google, but everyone who complained of the problem had a different setup from me. Anyway, my preferred view for the old My Computer, called just Computer in Win7, is the default "Tiles" view, per the attached file Tiles.jpg which I screenshot off my work computer. But it's not available on my brand new machine. There is no Tiles view available in the dropdown. It has been replaced with an "Extended Tiles" view which is completely useless. I think this may have happened when I tried and failed to install Win8 over 7, but who knows, I just noticed it the other day. The best I can do is a custom "Details" view, per the attached Details.jpg. It has basically the same information about the drives but lacks the other hardware. I know this is not a big problem, but I would like to fix it anyway. All the posters in other forums where this issue arises installed some kind of aftermarket software which modified their folder views. I did install one called Folder Options X which disables full line selection within folders, but I have this installed on both computers so that can't be the culprit. I do not want to reset all my folder views unless absolutely necessary. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. TIA.

You said this happened - the lack of the view option - after an attempted Windows 8 install? What about that "failed"?

You can try making a new Windows user account, log into it, and see if it shows up in the new account. Otherwise, I've never come across this - sounds like something about the Windows shell was modified, or even damaged.

Well, I'm just speculating. I don't look at that Computer view that often, so it could have been anytime since I got the computer about two weeks ago. Yeah, I bought the $30 Win8 full install from MS, loaded it onto a DVD, spent two and a half hours (I will use a USB stick next time!) installing, it got through the reboot and driver update, and then it just said it failed and restored my computer back to the way it was. No idea why (maybe I needed a BIOS update first?) and I don't really care, except if it messed up my Win7.

Interesting idea about a new user account...I will try that and report back. I might as well create one for the GF anyway :)

Ah, another Windows 8 success story. :p

Please do! And hopefully she appreciates it.
