Just got a new Gateway laptop 6822 and for the past 5 days I've been losing 1 Gig on the HD according to the "My Computer" info.
Is something in Vista raping me of my HD space or is My Computer reading the drive incorrectly?

Free space left or the size of the drive?
If it's free space, I don't mean to sound like an a**, but use the search function, this type of problem has been seen before. What's happening is that Vista is likely using the space for restore points so you can either leave it (~10% disk space max I think) or disable it to get that ~10% back, note that doing this makes you lose your safety net.
If it's size of the drive that's decreasing, what's very likely happening is that sectors on the HDD are bad and Vista is blocking them from being used so any information that would fall on those sectors isn't, and thus not being corrupted. In this case, you should call on warranty to get the drive replaced as it's very likely, failing already. -

It's the free space that's disappearing. How can I set the space that the restore points takes up to lower than what it is now?

You should also be able to set a specific size for system restore points under the "system" panel in Control Panel. Vista doesn't HAVE to use 10% of the HDD for restore points.

Take a look at the guide in my sig, "Where's my space going?"

Thanks guys
I read the thing on "Shadow Storage" and came across this great article on how to change it yourself! Here it is: http://bertk.mvps.org/html/diskspacev.html
Mine was set at a maximum of 33 Gigs!!!!!! No wonder it was going quick LOL. I now have it set for a max of 9 Gigs, is that good enough or should I bump it up a little?
*Update - I just regained 5 Gigs after doing thisThanks guys!

Unless you need the space for something else, don't touch it. You paid for the space, and having it sit there unused means you are wasting money. Let Windows use it until you need it yourself, then start changing the settings.

I generally don't leave System Restore on at all, but when I do, I never give it more than 5 GB. I use my storage space for STORAGE
