There are several data recovery programs out there. I have had success with "recover my files" and a few other that I cant remember right now

Why wasnt your data backed up? I think im going to petition that there be a confirmation page on this site when you login to make you confirm that you backed up your data recently. I hate seeing things like this because they are so easy to prevent!

    DATA BACKUP

    YOU HAVE TO BACKUP

    ALWAYS

Even if external harddrive cost $1000 I would still BACKUP

I would kill myself if I lost my data

Well... DONT USE THE HDD FOR NOW!!! Find (most likely BUY) GOOD reliable software and you might need another HDD to move the stuff onto

Try TestDisk to recover the partition table as it was before. If that fails, use PhotoRec to recover all data from the drive. Note that with PhotoRec it is important to recover all data to a separate hard drive.

Like Gregory said above, testdisk is amazing software. It will scan your entire hard drive contents, and rebuild your MBR. It can also red filesystem contents and copy files to a different disk.

Data Scavenger saved a me. Pop the drive in an external enclosure, install Data Scavenger on another computer and use that computer to do the recovery.
