... so w/ the following specs, could I run Vista w/ Aero decently?
Compaq nx9600
Intel Pentium 4 561, 3.6GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB
1GB DDR2 533 (2x512MB)
ATi Mobility Radeon X300 64MB Dedicated VRAM
Hitachi TravelStar 7K100, 100GB, ATA, 7200RPM
17" 1440x900 Display

I'm pretty sure it can run Vista, but I think you will need at least a 128MB Dedicated to run Aero. I could be wrong, so use the Vista Upgrade app to check your laptop. Just Google to find it.

the question is whether or not it can run it at 1440x900 default 17" widescreen resolution...

I'm gonna say yes, simply because a gma950 can easily run aero on a 1280*800 desktop. So a much more powerful card in the x300 will have no problem at a slightly higher resolution.

You'll be fine with aero. I've installed Vista on the integrated ATI solution (based on the ATI x300) on systems with higher resolutions, such as 1600x1200 with no aero problems.
1 GB RAM isn't ideal for Vista, but those specs should run pretty well -- about on par with XP... propable slightly slower if you have lots of apps open at once.
