I am curious if it is possible to upgrade my laptop to 64 bit from 32 bit vista using the disc from my pc build. What I want to know is it true the product key is the same as 32 and 64 bit and is it possible to reinstall the os on my laptop just using another 64 bit disc. They are both premium. Thanks

Yes, that is 100% possible. The license is good for both 32 and 64 bit, all you need is the media which it sounds like you have.

With vista home basic, Home premium, and business you can buy a 64 bit disc for $10 more. (Ultimate comes with both). If you already have that key activated on your PC, you would need another one to use it on the laptop.

Keep in mind that to go from 32-bit to 64-bit you will need to do a clean install. All your files will be deleted in the process, so make sure you back up your data first!

I did a clean install. It wasn't easy for Acer doesn't have a support page for my laptop. I tried to put in the Product key and it was saying the product key for my 32-bit os is still in use. I just restored everything back to factory new. I have read you need to call Acer or Microsoft to get a 64-bit key and change it. I dunno maybe I will wait until I get a support page to make it easier.

Actually, not completely deleted. Vista creates a backup which contains most of the files/programs/etc. you had in your previous version.
But ya, make a backup just to be sure. And in case you've frogotten to backup anythin, Vista creates a folder called "Windows.old" in your C: drive which contains the back-up. :)

    Cheers!

    P.S.: I just switched to 64 bit. :D
