I'm an architecture student and I only know about the cream of the crop of programs to use concerning this topic. I know if you go to autodesk.com and fill out a student form, you can get a trial with revit or autocad. You do need a college email address. I really haven't used either when designing houses or buildings. I'm familiar with architecture desktop, but they stopped making that software a year ago and they are now calling it architecture autocad. Unfortunately, this program was not part of the trial programs you could download off their site if you were a student.

Studio viz had a 90 day trial time, but the 8 or so other programs had a student seat and could be used as long as you wanted. I'll try to find the link again.

I'm only in my first year of college, I'm still only going to a community college and then I'll transfer out. I've visted 3 full credited architecture schools around the Michigan and none of them I like. All focus way to much on art. None of them really prepare you for the real world. I went to a career school when in high school and 95% of the time we were working with computer designing our buildings and houses. In fact, at one school near Chicago, I had better skills in autodesk than the graduating class. All they were working on was sketchup like you stated above. J-dogg, what school do you go to and do you have any suggestions?
