I have windows home premium 64 bit, and my notebook is a gateway p-6831fx, and every time i install the windows update that went out on 4/14/10 keeps disabling my audio and ethernet drivers. Ive tried going to device manager and right click and selecting Scan for Hardware changes, but this doesn't work. I used system restore to return my laptop to working status. I tried reinstalling the update, and it worked fine for a day, but I turned on my computer again today to the same issue. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Same thing is happening with my HP except it's the Broadcom wireless card. I think I'll disable the updates, it's quite irritating.

That's not really solving the issue...

I wonder - is there a driver update coming from Windows Update?

Else, maybe you can do the update - then update the drivers?

Considering he reinstalled it manually, disabling automatic updates is a useless suggestion.

I would just rollback your driver and leave it alone, you probably wont notice much of a difference anyway.

driver problems? Start be verifying that all of your drivers are up to date.

System bios up to date first.

Now begin with the chipset driver, force-install if necessary (intel: -overall command line switch).

Get your basics in line, then move on to the others.

I fixed my ethernet with an optional windows update, however my audio drivers are still not functioning. I went to device manager and used "scan for hardware changes" and that didnt work, i went to gateway's website to download the audio drivers, which unfortunately didnt work either, so this leaves bios i suppose, but i have never tampered with bios so im not exactly sure what i have to do. Also i can rollback and turn off auto-updates, but then my university will not allow me to access the internet.

    bios, THEN chipset drivers.

unless you have a known good base, everything else is suspect
