I am using my laptop for regular tasks, and my task manager reports a 4GB usage of my total of 6GB of RAM.
Why is this happening?
Something is stressing 4 of the 8 available cores in my 720QM and the msnmsgr.exe32 is reporting to use 50500K, same for safari.exe32 using 43100K and so on, and under the Resource Monitor the image wmpnetwk.exe is reporting an usage of 2500000K of my RAM.
What is that? Why is my laptop using that much RAM?

Ok, I have traced it back to the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service the one using 2GB of RAM. How do I kill the process and leave it dead?
Already finished it 4 times and keeps coming... -
Go to the Control Panel Admin Tools Services and disable it from there.
-
Hm...maybe someone is streaming media off your PC without your consent? What are your network security settings?
Time to turn off Media Sharing if you haven't done so already. -
I killed it and disabled it...strange. The network was just set and this is the only laptop in theory...but it was consuming 2GB of RAM for doing nothing...no idea what that was...

did it made your systems performance slower? if not, why care?
-
-

maybe. but he doesn't state that.
-
Well 4GB out of 6GB being used, even when doing nothing is not the best thing around.
How can I disable the File Sharing. It restarts over and over again... -
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
well it IS the best thing around if your ram gets put to actual use instead of idling around not having any content in.
that's why i asked. -
I know, but it is consuming it but the network file sharing is not working, I have no network nor group to share anything with...so it is a waste, and i could need the RAM when running a program...and that file sharing has my cores jumping in speed...which I want to avoid (better battery life)

the ram will be freed when you need it.
-
Do you hibernate? I noticed sometimes when I hibernate without doing a real shutdown for a long time, my sidebar process uses 2.5gigs and other processes seem to use much more memory than normal too. I just shutdown/restart and all is well again.
-
The network sharing is consuming all my RAM, and I have killed the process tons of times, and still there, what can I do?
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
instead of stupid random killing of it, how about checking out what of the network sharing is enabled, how is it configured, and that. disable the "bug", not the "feature".
-
Everything is set to OFF and no file sharing, and it is still that process there.
-
2Gb RAM dedicated to a feature that's never used is not "the best thing" under any circumstances. -
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
everything is better than nothing. at worst, it's .. the same. but it has a chance to be better.
that's like the saying "if you try, you might fail. if you don't try, you already failed"
still, somethings strange with his setup anyways.
is this a clean install or the default hp envy installation? -
default...I have no ODD nor eODD so no DVD to be done...that MUST wait till 26 Dec...lol
-

just take a usb stick?
-
It almost sounds like malware at this point?
-
How could that be? the laptop is 3 days old?
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
it's called oem crap
it's like malware, but sold as a feature
-
Used the guide on the HP forum, uninstalled almost everything, and that thing is still there every now and then
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
that's why i would reinstall no matter what. you have a free usb stick, 4gb or more, around? get it to boot, and clean install (but use the ABR tool to grab your activation to restore it later.. why not?
)
-
If you want to explain it to me carefully I could...I dont really understand how to do this...
I would rather avoid doing so, since I have some software taht is hard to get installed... -

step one: download your windows 7 version of choice (and license) from the download-win7 thread in this forum section (as an iso file, links should still work)
step two: use this: http://store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool to create an usb stick that is bootable from your iso file. -
How many GB could that be?
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
2.3gb for the 32bit version. i don't know how big the 64bit version is (but a bit bigger)
-
Had that same problem serg.
wmp sharing was eating up all my cpu cycles and lots of ram.
The wmp sharing appeared right after I set up Windows Media Center.
Went into services.msc and disabled it, hasn't been a problem since. -
Oh, I also went into msconfig > services > unchecked "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service"
4GB RAM doing nothing
